Default Fuel pump ??? Noises

Driving the classic along yesterday with the window down and noticed an itermittent high pitch whistle ??

traced it to rear drivers side of car.

took fuel pump cover off to investigate its definately coming from pump

What i hear is this high pitch whistle, that stopps and a hiss can be heard as if something is venting or some pressure being released, then the whistle starts again

I know its difficult when describing noises, but anyone any ideas ??? is this "normal" or is the pump on its way out ????

cheers

ps dont know if itr relavent, but almost ran out of fuel a few weeks ago, wonder if there is some crap from bottom of tank on the pump ????
