fitting a scoobyecu!
hi all,ive just bought a scoobyecu and im fitting it to my z4ecu later,i know you have to cut the j1 resister but do you need to cut it completly off or just the wire side?
cheers eddy.
cheers eddy.
If it's a genuine ScoobyECU board or a 27C1028 chip and they are running Impreza base code (rather then Legacy), then the check engine diagnostics should work as normal.
Cut one side of the J1 resistor or remove it completely. If you need to go back to standard just replace the J1 reisitor with a wire link, as the resistor is 0 ohm and hence the same as a bit of wire.

well one of my mates did the soldering for me,and when i put it back in car it turns over but theres no noise from fuel pump, and engine check and engine managment light isnt comin on with ignition were as it as did before.so i took it bak off to see if i could see a problem with it and noticed that to of the fibre wires have come off.so i gave it back to him to take chip off and he cant get it off.hes made quite a mess of ecu really,is there anyone that will beable to fit this chip for me when i finally get hold of another z4 ecu.(not askin my mate again).

Very difficult to get out of the ECU if it's been soldered direct.
It is possible if you have a heated solder removal tool, but that's really only found in electronics manufacturer's. Even then there is a risk of lifting the copper tracks.
I don't even know if TV repair people use them. They tend to use a manual solder sucker and a soldering iron.
Due to the ECU main board using PTH (Plated Through Holes) it's very difficult to get the chip back out (Hence why a socket is normally used).
The easiest way to get the chip out is to cut all the legs off then suck the remainder out of the ECU board holes. But obvioulsy you end up with a knackered chip with no legs.

well i managed to get chip out undamaged, but ecu copper tracks had lifted, does anyone on here fit the chips for a price,as i will have to buy another ecu now i could do with someone who knows what there doing to fit it for me!

If you are going to buy another ECU get a V7, 6D, 7D or 7K
All of these have sockets already fitted, so just plug the chip in (the correct way round) and cut/remove J1 link.

i thought it had to be the same ecu (a z4)with my car being an import.

You can pretty much bung any ECU in if your chipping it (though best to steer clear of WRX Wagon ECU's 1C, 3B, V5, V9).
Your car will run fine with most of the WRX Saloon or UK ECU even without the chip. But obvioulsy the performance will vary due to the slightly different mapping (11.47psi UK & Early WRX Vs the Z4 12.7psi).
Don't run any STi ECU though as these run lean and aggressive timing.
V7, 6D, 7D or 7K would be fine as they are already socketed (although don't run the 7K without the chip, as it's an STi ECU)
2C, W6, U8, W9, Z4, Z5 or 6K would be fine but they are not socketed, so would require a socket to be soldered in (although don't run the 6K without the chip, as it's an STi ECU)
Most of the cars re-mapped in the UK run Z4 base code (including the offical Prodrive map) as it was the least buggy and one of the most recent released.
Your Z4 may still work without the chip despite the damage.

Try http://www.japperformanceparts.co.uk/ or http://www.gradea-subaru.co.uk/
Or Ebay, but not this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUBARU-IMPREZA...QQcmdZViewItem
I've got no idea what thats off, as the bracket and connector is compleley wrong for a 1994 WRX

just one more question for scott.t,when ive got one of the ecus you mentioned and got chip fitted do i need to do a full ecu reset with the male and female connectors under steering colum? as ive read this on another thread, but i was told you only need to reconnect the battery, could you just confirm which is right for me please!

It's very dissappointing that you are having these troubles. So much for plug 'n' play.......
