Default Tuning Imports

i own a 97 type R, and is standard apart from a green panel air filter, was thinking of getting a new exhaust system for a bit more power?
Does that mean, ideally that i need a re-map for increased fueling ( or new ECU as i've been told pre-99 engines can't be remapped)
Or is the power increase small enough not to be a problem

As I understand it.....

you will gain power from a de-cat alone, however you run the risk of running lean due to boost spikes due to the more free flowing nature of the new exhaust.

Ideally, the car should be mapped to suit the modification, as this makes sure any issues are sorted, and will turn a 10bhp increase pre-remap into a 40+ bhp increase. Pre MY99 cars cannot have their existing ecu's re-mapped, therefore you would need to change to something like an Apexi Power FC which is fully mappable (and can be re-mapped in the future for any more changes you may make). This should improve economy on part throttle also.

you would be looking at around the £800 to have it supplied fitted and mapped. Best mod I ever did, will totally transform the car

Look into the ECutek upgrade, there maybe some on ebay. Its not as versatile as the apexi and HKS systems, buts its cheaper to buy and set up and will do a good job.

You can get the MY97/98 ecu re-mapped, but it works out about the same price as an Apexi. If you want to keep all the original safety features of the original ecu then there is an option. I think that Scoobyclinic will have details or will be able to put you in touch with Pat the engine mapper.

Me I've got an Apexi With simulated antilag

Well whats the ecu with the spare socket that you add the chip to and cut the resistor?!?! I've got a 1993 import with a later type ecu board, and believe me its been remapped. Its cost £400 inc the remap.
