Default Strange cold running flat spot - HELP!!!!

Hi, I've had my 2001 bugeye for about a month now and it's got a strange problem that no-one can seem to fathom.

When it's cold if you press the throttle lightly, as though to build up enough revs to take the bite on the clutch, the revs build up and at about 1500-1700 rpm theres a slight flat spot and the revs carry on building up but at a greater rate.

As soons as you move off, ie the car is under load, there is no problems. Once the car warms up the problem goes away. The car drives sweet as anything apart from this.

The MAF was replaced about 2 weeks ago and the local Subaru garage have had the car back and pulled it apart. They can't find anything and say it is running as it should.

I've done a search and read about a problem similar to this on STi8 which could only be cured with a remap.

Anyone else had anything similar, or should I live with it until I'm ready to do a remap anyway and see what that does?. Your help is appreciated.
