Question Airbag warning light.....

Hello all,

I have done a few searches but nothing has been conclusive as of yet on this subject for me, so here goes...

I have a 98uk that has been illuminating the airbag warning light at me only after going full right lock. Once I re-start the car it goes back off in usual time.

I recently took a trip to the local dealer to see if they knew why the light was staying on, after a diagnostics check, they said that no fault was being stored but felt that the ring (was tempted to say piece) behing the wheel may be cracked or disformed is some way to cause a loss of connection and trigger the warning light. TBH it was only occasionally at first (about a week ago) but is now becoming more of a 3-4 times a day thing and I am getting fed up with switching off and starting back up again (I was told whilst light is on it will not deploy).

A quote of £306 to replace the £173 part is worrying to say the least and me being no millionaire am trying to find out if there is any other ways of making sure that it is definatley the part before I take the plunge, so my questions are;

a) If I locate the part cheaper, is this something I can do myself (something was mentioned about re-charging etc at the dealership??) without receiving a broken nose??
b) Will an ecu reset make the slightest bit of difference if worth doing at all??
c) Is there any directions for re-setting the new coil thingy??
d) What plugs and where, how do I check and what do I look for?? and...
e) Do I tape over the light/disconnect it and strap a pillow to my steering wheel????

I saw that people may have experienced the same problem but did not see if any solutions had been found or if the problems were ever rectified.

Many thanks in advance,

Gonza

a) Yes it's DIY (With a few precautions).
b) No, If it's not stored a fault then there isn't one to clear.
c) Whats a coil thingy????? Do you mean the ring?
d) Plugs are all behind the wheel/airbag.
e)YES

Dyney,

Thanks, I do mean the ring yes, they call it the 'roll connector'. I think that I may be able to source one, just was unsure whether it is a specialist job really, I'd be quite happy to do it as long as it wasn't too complex or 'dangerous' with it going off etc.

What sort of precautions would I need to take or do you know of a helpful link??

Thanks for your help....

Gonza,
read the threa i did when i swapped my steering wheel, that may give you a few safety pointers, you'll need to remove the cowling around the column, and really just take off what you need to to change the ring, that is assuming you can find one intact.... they fall aprt quite easily...... i suspect that most suabru breakers wouold be able to supply one, as far as i'm aware, they are fine, even when the airbag on the vehicle it was fitted to has deployed....

ps, if you want to see the pics, you may have to paste the url for them into your browser....

RON,

Thanks for the response, very helpful with the piccies!!

I beleive the 'black box' type thing behind the wheel is what I'm replacing, have you or anybody else ever changed one of these? I wasn't sure about settings as one post I read mentioned something about the right positioning???

Anyway, thanks for your imput, looks like I'm getting closer to getting this total bill down!!

Cheers,

There are two locating lugs on it that slot into the steering wheel, you need to make sure that you have enough 'turn' on it each way (lock to lock so to speak) when you fit it, otherwise you'll damage it..... but that's only really a case of turning it a certain amount each way and centralising it... i'm sure it'd make sense once you had it apart..... like i say, if you do get one, for gods skae don't let it fall apart.... cos if it does, you'll never get it back the way it should be..... the 'mess' in this picture is the result.....
The black thing thing with the yellow sticker is basically the bit you'll be replacing, but clearly yours will be attached to the car!!

Once again, thanks.... will the roll connector stay attached to the steering wheel once the wheel is detached from the steering column or is that what I'm trying to avoid??? Sorry for all the questions...

The 'mess' in the picture, is that tape all part of it??...oh dear!! I think I shall have a couple of pairs of hands present then....

your help has been much appreciated...

on the my98, the roll connector will stay on the steering column...... you just unplug the airbag from it, and remove the steering wheel... ( assuming you've removed fuses, and disconnected the battery just to be extras safe..)

Have you called Saj? He might be able to help

Basic precautions like disconnecting the battery and then having a cupa

Make sure the wheel is straight before you remove it.

Take the column surround off (4 srews underneath)
You'll need a torq bit to get the airbag out of the stearing wheel. (screws are in the holes on the side of the wheel centre).
Unplug and remove airbag. The yellow airbag plug is a safety type where you need to slide the green part up to unplug it.
Undo the column nut but leave it on a couple of turns!!!!
Then pull the wheel off (The nut will stop you hitting yourself in the face when it finally lets go of the column!!)
I think there are 3 or 4 screws holding the ring to the column assembly. Undo these and it should come off.

As all good manuals say "Fitting is the reverse of removal"

My old wheel and the ring from my STI7 wheel have been thrown about (in the boot for months!) and they haven't come apart.
