Default HELP! Check Engine Light

Okay, Scooby MY97 Uk turbo.

She's been on the drive for 2 weeks, alarmed but not moved.

Started first time, idled as normal. Started on a short journey, 2 minutes on and CEL light comes one.

oil level looks normal but I gently drove back here for help from scoobynet.

I see you have had loads of posts. Therefore you must have seen threads on the self diagnostic for ECU faults. In a nutshell, you can join the black connectors under your dash and the CEL will flasg out a binary code dictating the fault, i.e. long blink = 10, short blink = 1, therefore, long, long, short, short = 22 = I seem to remmber knock sensor??? Try that, post your code and someone will let you know the fault....

Fair point!!! If you cannot do the self diagnostic yourself, pop into the Subaru dealers who will plug in their equipment and diagnose the problem straight away. If you use them for servicing, they may not charge you.

I may have a look tomorrow when it's light.

But my local dealer is pretty good and reasonably priced - they've had all my servicing and a bit more so far.

Thanks for your replies

I had my first CEL experience a couple of weeks ago and its dead easy plugging the black connectors together to find out problem
When it came to finding the green connectors though for a ecu reset, they were little buggers to find.

Done as search for knocksensor and a few people say they fail rarely.....but there's quite a few threads about it.

EDIT: Just started car and CEL doesn't come on until a minute or so of running - is that bad ?

So...(free BTT!)

Is this in all likely hood a sensor problem - or is it impossible to say.

Car had been regularly serviced at dealer and they've said everything has always been ok. engine sounds no different to me now.

No problems mate - this site is all about passing on good information that you have received from others. I received the following information and hopefuly you will pass it on to some other punter who is tearing his/ her out with a similair problem in the future!!!

On that note, try the following site which was recommended to me by a fellow Scoobynetter:

www.saxonfields.freeserve.co.uk

Go to Scooby Page/ General Info.

Hopefuly that will help you. Failing that, if you have a good relationship with your stealer (and a fat chequebook!!!) then get on down there and they will sort you out. That said, my old MY98 UK Turbo threw up that code for ages and I never got round to fixing it. It is frustrating as the ECU restricts the boost when illuminated and it is just one of those things you want fixed.

Hopefuly it is just the sensor - you should be able to pick up a second hand one from a Subaru Breakers/ Scoobynet etc.

Good luck!!!

Ah, a happy ending to my Scooby paranoia....

Dealer plugged in and tried to reset sensor - no luck.

So they reckon just a new knock sensor @ £88 + VAT. Even going to fit it 'free' with the interim service.

To the Sheffield dealer
