Question LAMBDA SENSOR AND FUEL ECONOMY

I think I am using more fuel than usual lately, the Lambda on my 97 uk turbo has not been changed and the car has done 65k. Do you think this may cause the mpg problem? I have also heard that you can clean them to make them better? is this true? My mate cleaned his to make it pass an mot could I do the same? cheers

You can clean them with carb cleaner, Not the best practice, But can get the desired result. They can start to deteriorate @ 30k but can also go to 100k.
Try this chap (Grant) http://www.gendandirect.co.uk/category_111.html
you can Email them to check suitability.

so mine at 123k might be getting tired ?? would this explain slight hesitancy when cold at 2-3k rpm ?

If it has never had one, then i would be tempted to replace as off boost driving is where you get your economy & where the O2 sensor is used for fuel correction.
Depending on the year of your car it could be coil packs starting to deteriorate, But could aslo be the lambda being a bit slow / tired !!

A dodgy Lamba will make the car run to rich off boost, causing the engine to feel a bit bogged down and high fuel consumption. A wide band lamba probe stuck up your exhuast can confirm if your car is running rich.

as far as im aware its original o2 sensor
i get 25/26 mpg average on mixed driving on optimax
i did notice in the cars sevice history it was taken to the dealer to check its hesitancy but they could not find a fault

Question

Cheers for the replys evryone, looks like a clean or a new one when I have the money is on the cards. A few more questions! is it easy to take out? do you need some type of special tool? is it better to take out when engine is cold or a bit warm?

Thanks again.

Take out when cold & on your model you can normally get at it with a 22mm Ring Spanner.
