Default Whine on Turbo

hi.
help a fellow newbie - went to view a V5 STi Type-R and it had a whine on the turbo... is this is a comon fault on the v5 or just a sign of a bad kept one ? am aware of the AirFlow fault on the MY99 but was surprised to see a V5 which is COMPLETELY standard have a whine on it...

Is it better to replace or rebuild...? what sort of monies are we talking (roughly)

Cheers
p.s has had a rebuilt engine though

This probably isn't a problem.

Mine did it and this was because it had the upgraded vf24 roller bearing turbo, this was an option extra in jap land. The guy who I bought it off of thought it was on the way out al well.

If it boosts ok and doesn't smoke it's probably fine. A good check is to blip the thottle and then switch the engine off. Mines used to wind down over about 10 seconds and was vey noticable with no engine noise to drown it out. A turbo with bearing problems would not do this due to the extra drag on the internals.

Mines gone and it doesnt smoke as it is burning the oil so efficiently and after a long trip the oil level has dropped on the dipstick..and it has all the symptons you are describing.......

Sorry to hear that. Does it still boost ok and does it take a long time to wind down when engine switched off?

A bit of whistle or whine isn't really a good indication of any fault.

For example:
It is very noticable if there a cone filter (or resonator box is removed), or a decat/performace downpipe is fitted.
Check all pipe work for any obvious leaks.

Now if sounds like a jet engine on take-off, there would cause for serious concern.

But obviously...if you use it as an excuse to knock a few £££ on the selling price It's not unhead of for a turbo to fail within a short period after an previous engine failure.
