you can remove it no bother, just use an equal tee to put the plumbing back together without the cannister in place.
saves about a pound in weight, its there to filter petrol fumes before they are vented to the chassis leg iirc

Mine was disconnected a while back and could not work out what it was and the picture reminded me!!

It is there for emissions compliance. It is no longer appropriate on factory cars to allow the fuel vapours to vent to atmosphere. They are put through the engine at appropriate times under the control of the purge valve by the ECU which purges the charcoal canister. If you remove it then you can vent the pipe at the near side of the engine bay to atmosphere and drill a hole in the fuel filler cap, blocking off the other bits as appropriate, the bracket for the canister will save a bit too. I'm sure this has been covered before...
