Default Oil Change questions

Hi All

I'm looking to do an oil change on my 66k mile MY00 turbo. I want to put in a 10w40 fully synthetic oil such as Shell Helix orCastrol RS but I am unsure of the oil that's in there at the moment (the car was previously serviced at a main dealer and I've heard that some of them use semi synth)
The car will not be doing track days and the like, it will not be modified from standard....it'll only be used as a weekend car

So my questions are as follows.....

Is a "branded" e.g. Shell semi synthetic oil OK?

What's the deal with 5w 40?..........the recommended is 10w 40 isn't it?

If I go for fully synth do I need to use a flushing oil?.......only I've heard about these flushing oils making valve stem seals leaky and increasing oil consumption

Should I go for Shell Helix or Castrol RS? (I can get a good price on them!)

Cheers
John

I would NOT use an engine flush in a subaru engine..

the subject of oil grade is a long one.. personnaly I would use 15W50 Motul 300v Competition and do in my own car.. the fact your car is standard shouldn't mean you should use a lesser oil imho.

Prefill the oil filter before fitting... also worth cranking the engine with crank sensor disconnected to get oil pressure up before starting like normal.
