I have something similar that seems to come and go. It only started after fitting a clutch kit.

It makes a whining noise under deceleration in any gear and neutral. If when in 4th gear I pull the gear lever back it stops. I think mine is down to the box and linkage being mounted slightly different than before and either catching something or the vibration from the box is being conducted in a different way.

Its also seems a very common problem with the AWD's.

yeah sounds like a release bearing. does it change/go away when you gently rest your foot on the clutch?

I would have thought that the noise from the bearing in the flywheel would only be there if the clutch was pressed in (disengaged), as the input shaft would not be spinning in it otherwise?

Ideal is to change the clutch, the 'pull' type thrust bearing AND the needle roller bearing in the flywheel
It is the last bit that doesn't get done as they sometimes seem welded into the flywheel.

It is a full box/clutch out job.
Graham.
