dual mass flywheel
called at Leek Transmission Centre today to price up new clutch seemed good price £406 fitted for a luk clutch. What did worry me is that he told me my 93 wrx import has a dual mass flywheel which might need replacing to but would not be able to tell untill the clutch is off this would cost an extra £271 + vat. No other garage I've spoke to said any thing about this can anyone give me any info about this would be very greatful

ive never heard of this before but i would say at most your flywheel would need to be skimmed(have you got any clutch judder ?)
mine had very severe cracking very suprised it held together at all
pick up a second hand one get it skimmed ready for new clutch and fit it while box is off shouldn't cost any more then
thats what i did when i had new clutch fitted

Let me guess......they'd no doubt have the job done and dusted by the time you got back to the workshop aswell....
I've never heard of any impreza having a 'dual mass' flywheel... sounds to me like they want some more money out of ya......

No dual mass flywheel on yours, You could get a lighter fly wheel from Api Engines for around £90 , which will of course be like a new one & give the motor a little more perkyness, cannot remember what price Davids (Api) organic clutch kits are , but i remember them being very reasonable.

Bob, tell me where you get flywheels skimmed for £20.00, we'll take all ours there.
There's no such thing as a dual mass flywheel on an Impreza. This sounds like pure sales Bullsh*t to me. Our lightened ones are £120,00 plus VAT and NEW genuine are only £220.00 or so.
Our Exedy performance clutch with release bearing is £250.00 on the group buy and £320.00 individually. It compares to the AP racing organic which is £440 ish without a release bearing.
Beware of cheap 'factor clutches ' if you want to avoid judder.
I'd not be happy getting my car repaired where they are talking about dual mass flywheels on Subaru's, they plainly don't know a Subaru from Camel [ which also don't have DM flywheels incidentally ]
Good Luck David APi Impreza / APi Engines

actually subaru do do dual mass and fluid flywheels at least thats whats on the tickets we get. they call the one in the legacy the dual mass which is the one where the face that the clutch works on can move independently to the face that bolts to the crank but that design tends to squeek after it's done a few thousand miles, and for a time subaru did change it all under warranty to what they call the fluid flywheel which is what they use on the turbos now which has a ring of bolts of sorts on the back and when you look at the centre where the spiggot bearing goes you can tell it's not machined from one lump of metal, never had one of these apart though so don't know why they call it a fluid type. the dual mass however is a big chufty type flywheel and the 2 faces are held together by about 8 or so cylinders in between the 2 faces which contain strong springs i think.
