Default new age WRX Up-pipe options..

Looking to replace the up-pipe on my new age WRX with a de-cat version.. seems to be a few different ones available from Helix with flex joint, Helix 'copy' (cheaper version of same), Hayward & Scott with a double 'slip joint' and the Magnex which I have not seen a picture of..

Guess they will all do the job, wondered if anyone has had a 'bad' experience with any of these, such as poor fit, cracking, blowing etc.

Also be interested to know if the Magnex has some sort of expansion joint on it, or is it just a straight pipe? thanks

I have heard of the flex joint failing in the helix ones, so I imagine the cheaper copy would do the same. Heard nothing but good reviews on the Hayward & Scott downpipes, but not on the up pipe. Do a search on here and that should give you any info that you need.

Cheers, I am a bit loathed to invest in a cheapie Ebay pipe given how long it takes to fit the thing.. think I've already read every up-pipe post on S'net, not really found anything about the options good or bad.. so any further comments welcome!

I presumed the original heat sheilds would go back over any of the replacement de-cat pipes, is that the case?

the heat shields on my old up-pipe & new one were welded on, i dont know of anyone personally whos fitted old shields to a new up-pipe but i suppose it could be done.needs one of the more experienced scoobynetters to fill us in on this.

dont forget if you fit an up-pipe without an egt bung youll need to put a 2.2k ohm resister in the egt socket to stop the cel light coming on. did it to mine and it hasnt come on yet.

wrap the up pipe in heat wrap, keeps the heat down ,reduces lag, and quietens resinance.

Was planning on getting one with the EGT boss in it and putting my existing EGT sensor in the new pipe, will that avoid any CEL issues? - or will the de-cat cause a CEL anyway?

Scooby clinic fitted the up pipe and de-cat pipe to my03 wrx i,ve had no problems at all . The heat sheild is not on the up pipe but it is on the de-cat pipe. From what i can see there is no flex pipe on the up pipe on my wrx

Scoobyclinic fitted mine (although I supplied parts) and they did an excellent job at an excellent price. AFAIR the up-pipe they supply and fit is also slip jointed.

Curious as to how many have wrapped the up pipe and does it reduce noise ?

The EGT boss is specced by you when it is ordered from Ian at H&S. Classics and Newage STi's don't need it and Newage WRX's do.

The EGT is onlt there to allow the ECU do know if the EGT are too high and they might disintergrate the CAT into the Turbo.

Cheapest option - If your going for about 320 on a Newage WRX, fit an STi Uppipe. they are the same as a Classic uppipe and will set you back about 50 pounds. Fit a 2.2K ohm resistor into the plug for the EGT sensor (drivers suspension turret) and enjoy!

^^ good idea.. anyone with an STi up-pipe going cheap?...

So what about gaskets and studs, the H & S and magnex ones don't come with them, Helix does, is it a case of re-use from the old pipe, or do I really need new ones?

Studs, it depends what they are like.
Is it worth not putting new gaskets on for the amount of work it takes to replace em if the old ones decide to give up ?
