Default Bugeye fuel Consumption

Hi Chaps (and any ladies).

I recently purchased a 2001 bugeye WRX and at present it's totally standard.

With a full tank (approx. 51 litters) I'm getting about 230 miles which only equates to about 20.50 MPG.

I know bugs are heavy but is this normal? I do a mix of motorway and hard countryside driving.

I'm currently running (1st 2 tanks) on normal 95 unleaded and I'm planning to switch to Optimax or similar. Will I notice better consumption with the switch?

I done a number of searches and noticed people are getting around the 250 to 270 miles, which just made ask "what's up with mine"?

Cheers,

Charlie

You can't really get an accurate gauge of MPG that way unless you run it dry and know exactly what the tank takes (IIRC it's a 60 ltr tank, not 50, so by your calc, you will be even worse than 20!!), suggest fill it up to the top, set the trip and when you next fill it up do the same again and you can work it out exactly..

Mine nearly always averages 26 MPG but if I do more round town or thrash it, it goes to 23 MPG, on a motorway run I've got it up to 29..

So in theory @ 26 MPG I would get 340 to a full tank!

Always run on Optimax/Tesco 99, so don't know if 95 would be better on MPG..

Hi....

I jus bought the exact same mate....

On my first full tank, filled it to the brim and i've currently hit 250 and the red light ain't quite on altho it will be on in the next couple of miles...... (all town work and i'm still getting the feel for it so prolly holding 2nd too long for ideal consumption!!) Also been thrashing it a little when i have the chance which isn't often!

As regards measuring your MPG, when your saying 51 litres i take it you mean thats what it took to fill it again?? I had an RX8 before this and i was averaging around 17 mpg (all town work) so its all good!!

Oh yeh, another thought, if the 51 ltrs you mention is from when your fuel light comes on, I'm sure the reserve tank is bigger than the 9 ltrs quoted in the manual, I did 40 miles with the light on and there was still 5 ltrs left, so it's probably more like 12 ltrs...

Nah waht you're getting seems above average to be honest. I've seen 180 miles or less to a tank in my bugeye.

Motorway driving you can push up to 300 miles but thats sensible off the turbo driving.

180 on a tank, that would be 13.8 MPG LOL.... if you mean 180 and the fuel light came on that's still only about 18 MPG, I wouldn't call either above average!! LOL

Actually you're right Im not running it dry or till the light is on but just before. I

f you read it properly I didnt say what im getting was average I said what Charles was getting was average for a bugeye. 230 miles to a tank seems about right to me with a mixture of hard, cruising and town driving.

Thanks for the input all!

You've at least put my mind at rest that I seem to be getting about average miles out of a tank.

I will try Optimax and see if there's any difference (mileage outweighs premium price and engine benefits)

Just going to have to remove the lead from my right boot, but it's very difficult to do

Thanks once again!

Apologies Iain, must stop speed reading, LOL.. yeh, as 'reserve' is actually more like 12 ltrs or so, from full to the fuel light coming on is approx 10/11 gallons, so 230 is around 23MPG rather than 20, if your caning it a bit or around town, about right then..

Except of course that your speedo reads 10% over (like mine) so you're actually getting less than 20!

Believe manufacturers build in around 10% over-read, would not have thought the same applies to the odometer though..

If you're running the tank down below about a quarter full, then beware the dreaded fuel starvation when cornering.

It's happened to me twice, and after the first time I said 'never again' ( ) - my tank never gets below 1/4 now.

Mine's a totally standard MY01 Bugeye WRX. Averages around 27MPG on a real mixture of driving inc. shorter journeys and around town. Up to 32MPG when it's mainly long runs but this includes cruising, lanes, towns, blasts on A roads etc. - the secret is in using the turbo and putting your foot down when it's worthwhile and avoiding pointless acceleration and braking when in traffic.
