buy an 18g as it has better mid range, 20g is more topend power and takes time to appreciate it

Fair point, I've read so many different statements re this. My VF28 delivers 1 bar by around 3,500 so TBH assuming the 20G delivers the goods around the same or 4,000 I'll be happy.

when i had my sti8 tmic fitted mine used to reach 1bar at 3100rpm and 1.4bar at 3400rpm, but i had an MRT inlet pipe fitted as well. the 18g will get there a little quicker

There is not a lot of point going for the 18G IMHO.
In 4th gear on a decent TD05-06-20G you could expect 1 bar at 3300-3400 rpm with a good set of tubular headers and a bit less with O/E headers, better still ported O/E.

20G the best option for me at the moment. We shall see...
