Default P1 knocking, Options on rebuild?

My p1 has just started knocking, fineish at idle ( light knock ) but a loud knock at around 3krpm, im saying that this is the big ends?

What are my options now? Im sure ive seen people offering rebuilds for around £1300 ?? I want to keep this as cheap as possible but, if there isnt much cost difference i may also consider other options, ie 2.5 short block etc.

Can someone suggest who to speak to and approx prices, ill be giving api a ring on monday, and powerstation. Ive heared PS have sti 8 new engines on a special, anyone confirm this and got a price fitted?

Im gutted, please give me some advice, i need this done fast too, so who has a good turnaround on this type of work?

Somebody was doing delivery mileage STI8(?) short motors for £800+vat. They were from cars that had gone straight for 2.5 conversions. Otherwise a 2.5 conversion is £1500-£Where-d'ya-wanna-stop?

Cheapest would be to find a second hand short motor but no guarantees... I've got an STI one kicking around if you're interested...

Craig I can't believe this mate, we were only talking on Tuesday about this being fairly common failure, gutted for you mate.

When I was going through the same turmoil as you, I spoke to all the major players. Powerstation being one of them and the price for the STi 8 bottom end and fitting etc is £2600(no warranty). Not sure what the availability is now though.

£1500 for a 2.5 your find is just for the bottom end.

I spent a month doing reseach on what road to go down, as you know my cars at APi, speak to David mate he will talk you through your options. It's an education!!

Sorry its happened mate, as Si said above on Tuesday this seems to be a common problem.

When Si gets his car back from API you'll have to come to another meet to see what yours would be like if it had a 2.5 block.

As the lad's have said bud, give David at API a shout.

David and his team have just done the re-build on my car
at a reasonable cost with a warranty.

Thanks guys, ill give API a ring on monday, but for now anyone give me an idea of what they charge for just a basic rebuild, and what sort of warranty they offer?

Simb - Can you email me details of what ur having done @ API, along with a price breakdown, and any of the other options u were considering. Im still new to scoobs and dont know of alot of places to start looking, ive only had the car 6 weeks!

Sorry to hear about your engine mate. Must be pretty heartaching when this happens.

What they charge depends on the amount of damage , and they'll only know that when they strip the engine. At least they won't charge you a fortune for the exploratory work and still leave you with a knackered engine like some dealers have been known to do.

1.5-2.5k seems to be a common price range reported on here...but like I say it does depend on the extent of the damage and what options you go for on the rebuild.

This is from the states, do uk cars have 5 year, 60k drivetrain warranties??

http://www.subaru.com/owners/warrant....jsp?year=2000

Mines just gone over 62k, really P'd off that these expensive cars are breaking around 60k, there has to be some sort of law suit against subaru, this is terrible, these cars were 30k new!!! Maybe get everyone together and display our thoughts to subaru, we deserve to be compensated, even the worst engines make 100k without this trouble

Looks like the 2.5 is the most promising at the mo, depending on price, ive put another post asking specifically for conversion prices from dealers. If this falls into my budget then this is the way i will go. Still be speaking to API and PS tomorrow for any other options they can come up with.
