Gonna fit a new fuel filter this wekend. How do I go about releasing the fuel pressure before fitting?

I went about it by disconecting the fuel pump connector and starting the car till it wouldn't run.... then took the pipes off the fuel filter and fuel pissed everywhere, obviously my method didn't work too well.

I'd like to know recommendations too as i'll need to disconnect all the fuel pipes to fit a MY98 manifold.

Tony.

PS spoke to Jon (Kerr) who i believe you have spoken too.... great result i think on his GEMS @ PE. You'll get there with yours too

You could try clamping off the feed either before or after the filter, not really looked i just pulled the pipe off
Its no use disconnecting the fuel pump the motor will not run

LOL you *****

Just put a rag over the pipe and push it off the connector at the fuel filter. (trying to pull the pipe off is more difficult than pushing it off with a screw driver). Also if it's really stubborn then spray some WD-40 up the edges of the pipe to help it slide off.

i fitted a feul pump yest' and tried turning over the engine then taking of the pipes but there seemed too much feul so put pipes back on and undone the 8 nuts and released the pressure that and it worked fine with no feul spraying anywhere.

hope that helps.

I seem to remember on my old golf that you disconnected the fuel pump relay and turned the car over for a while.

Yes I used to do a similar thing on Renaults, you took out the fuel pump fuse to deactivate the pump, then turned the engine over until it ran dry and stalled. That depressurises the fuel lines. Unlike an old carb-fed engine, there's a hell of a lot of pressurised fuel in there so once the engine stalls, you know the lines are empty (ish). Take off whatever pipes you need to and you'll get a bit of a drip, but it won't be the Niagara Falls.

Thing is the Fuel pump relay on a classic (not sure of newage - poster as so often on here hasn't posted car spec...bloody annoying sometimes) is right up behind the dash...if you fancy taking out your guages to get at it...feel free. The fuse IIRC also kills the ECU - so that won't release any fuel pressure either

It's only petrol, not as if its going to blow you up or anything A few old rags around by the pipe joints and a container or petrol proof bucket (some can melt ) to dump the old filter in and your sorted.

Or just undo about 8 small bolts under the boot carpet and take the connector off the pump..... 5 minute job if that.

Tony.

I never knew changing a fuel filter was so difficult.
