Default Brick wall at 5000rpm - MAF?

MY 01 Bugeye. Like hitting a brick wall at 5000rpm - I assume that this is "limp home mode". The idle is suddenly all over the show as well - surging and almost dying then evening out for a bit.

From what I have read on Snet, it sounds like it's time to get it diagnosed by an expert. Does anyone know of someone in the Surrey area that they can recommend. I don't really want to start paying main dealer prices for diagnostics!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Consider Power Engineering for help.
Technically very strong.
You may find it is simply overboost = fuel cut.

They resolved similar prob for me 3 years ago (and gave me 20 bhp extra too!

Graham.

Quite exillerating isn't it?

If you have a CEL shown the car will be in limp home mode, if the CEL is shown then the error code can be read out of the car by connecting the diagnostice conenctors together.

If no CEL is shown then as said earlier chances are your car is over boosting, could be some problem with your wastegate or the the plumbing to the wastegate actuator {or the bulb in your cel don't work }.

Wink

Jeeeesus!!!! Power Engineering are asking £125 + VAT per hour for rolling road Diagnostics - nearly twice that asked by my local Subaru dealer (£72.50 + VAT)

Bearing in mind the symptoms, should I invest in a MAF sensor or bite the bullet and book it in? My local Subaru dealer has already done the huge intake of breath which makes me immediately suspicious of a rapidly rising bill. Does anyone know of someone trustworthy and reasonable priced within say 40 - 50 miles of Weybridge in Surrey?

Pleeeeeeeaaaase!

Over boosting - does that mean exactly what it says? Boost not controlled, for some reason, and "something" steps-in to stop a big bang??

Think I have the same problem in a MY01. Noticable under very hard aceleration. Seems to be a "zone" and it picks itself up again once it's got through it. Was hoping that a general clean-up of the breathing pipes would solve it...

Mine refuses to go through the 5000rpm barrier and there's no way I'm gonna try and push it. Booked in with local mechanic to see if he can figure - he's a good man. Wish me luck!

My 99 UK turbo is doing the same. I have done the normal diags and its coming up as a MAF sensor problem. Ive been on the phone to my local Subaru centre and he said my syptoms are that of a failing boost solenoid. He told me to bring the car down for some tests and told me that he wont charge me for the diags

What a nice man

Going down this friday morning. A new MAF for my MY99 is £68, not sure if thats without VAT though.

There may be a number of different problems here, so probably different solutions, but please post what solves it in each case so that there's a bit of a trail for everyone else to follow.

TIA

Just an update on this, mechanic had the car Friday/Saturday and basically tightened up electrical connections here and there and the car is back to normal. Yippee! Just so that people are aware, I can now happily recommend a mechanic in Weybridge. The bill........£25!!!!!!!!!! Fantastic.
