Unhappy Power Steering failure ...

Went to Jap-Fest today and finished the day with a few spirited Donuts.

Unfortunately my power steering seems to busted now! Had it spinning on the spot on full lock and it all felt well. Parked up and let it cool down before shutting her off.

But .. When I went to leave I noticed the steering was heavy, got back to my mates house in Crawley and noticed it was totally unassisted when the engine was under 1K. Popped the bonnet and noticed some smoke! (not a lot but there's obviously a leak somewhere and it's dripping/running down ontot he exhaust). On Idle the engine sounds fine, but if you rev it there's a kind of whining noise. I also get power steering when it revs.

I'm pretty sure that the pump is busted but know nothing about Power steering or how much it's likely to cost to put right.

Anyone got any ideas as to what I can do to test? anyone else broke their P/S ?

Any idea how much of Queens finest I'm going to have to part with?

...

On the plus side, it was pretty mental having the car spinning on the spot. I did make me feel a bit like Solberg!

Pumps are prone to leaking. easy to repair if you are diy minded by stripping down and fitting knew 0-ring.The black earthing wire can weep too,Clean and seal with sealer.. The whining noise is from the bearings in the pump. Top up your fluid asap.

Sounds good,

Forgot to say it's a 2000 Bugeye Wrx.

Is there anything to look out for when removing and stripping down?

I read somewhere that you should never hold power steering on full lock for more than a couple of seconds.
I think it overheats the PS fluid.

I have a friend who had to replace a PS pump on a Mazda and it was an absolute fortune (several hundred pounds). Better to try and repair it I think....

chachi,
before doing anything to the pump make certain that is where the leak is coming from. it maybe the hoses.

Right, got some Oil, went into a carbar and was told I need Dexron II fluid? It says Auto Transmission Fluid on it, but it also says suitable for certain power steering systems.

So .....

Anyone heard of it, really don't want to put it in if its going to make things worse.

Any ideas?

Right, have topped up the fluid and it's still doing it ... although not quite as bad. Do I need to let it idle for a while to flush out any air that's in the system?

I'm probably being paranoid but I keep hearing other noises as well!

1. Is kinda like an electrical fiz when you rev (think it could be a plug cap loose, but losing light so can't tell). Will have a look over the weekend.

2. Is a quiet knock, it's not rythmic and doesn't seem to corolate to engine speed. But it's coming from the front left of the engine! bugger!

If I need a new pump, does anyone know anywhere other than the dealer to get one from? would like to get this fixed then address the other 2 noises.
