I run 1.0 bar with just a dawes, and still with downpipe cat fitted.....i got a fuel cut defender and run 1.2 for a while.
Had a remap since ....
The fuel cut is a nats knacker over 1.0bar in the 93/94 wrx's unless you have got a Z4 ecu.

Depends on a number of things. First and foremost you need the right monitoring equipment. Boost gauge, Knocklink and AFR gauge (e.g. Lambdalink) at a bear minimum. The most important of those is really the AFR so you can see that the fueling remains nice and rich with the increased boost.
Problem is on a import designed to run on 100 ron fuel it might be asking too much of the ECU map at the top end of the boost table. The U.K. spec maps, certainly on the MY99 onwards, run very rich at the top end so a little extra boost pressure shouldn't cause the fuelling to lean out significantly. In this case good gains can be had for very little cost.
In all honesty a re-map is the best bet for reliability and driveability. Unfortunately on an early model such as yours it's not as simple as getting a mapper to re-map it with their laptop (ECUTek). You would need either a replacement, mapable ECU (e.g. Apexi), or something like the ScoobyECU add on chip fitted to the current ECU to allow it to be remapped (Think ScoobyClinic are doing this now ).

Have seen many classicals (97-99) at 1.2 with no problem watsoever (but they all installed a oil cooler, just to be safe and for those LOOONG boost charges at high speed.
But is it safe for you? for you car? nobody knows. The abuse it tooked (or not) the oil changes it received, etcetcetcetcetc. Your question doesnt have a correct answer. In doubt? DONT TOUCH NOR INSTALL NOTHING!
But one thing is sure. I have seen remaped or stock scoobys blowing their motors, but never saw a dawes equipped failing...curious, at least!
