W6 is an early WRX ecu circu 1993/1994
Z5 is a WRX RA ECU circu 1994/1995

The Z5 will have a better fuel/ignition map and will pull slightly more boost then the W6.

Default W6 ecu

I have just put a W6 ecu on my uk spec impreza turbo engine but it only boosts to 10psi now is this right or might i have a problem with my 3 port boost solenoid? or something else maybe?

A W6 ECU will not give any benefit to a UK car. Infact the UK ECU is slightly better with regard to boost control and fuel/ignition.

I believe a Z5 is v.similar to a Z4 although I think it does have slightly better fueling/ignition maps.

If you want to sell on that W6, I'll possibly buy it off you. I broke mine and I need it as a spare to put back in case I sell my car at some point.

Any idea what ecu should be on a STi2 MY96 please and what's the connector configuration & colour?

Thanks

Scott - I wasn't too impressed with the Z5 map I saw - I thought the z4 would do better for UK fuel and be a smoother drive. (I didn't see if the car was chipped or not - I just ripped the map with SelMon.)

STi 2 is a 6K, STi 2 RA is a 7K. Connector config is the same as any 92 - 96 ECU. The connector block and connectors are yellow.

I'm just going on what some one told me. The Z5 is about the only base map I don't have a copy of.

I was told that the guy could run 1.1bar without det on a Z5 but a Z4 was detting.

Thanks for that, very helpful.

Do you happen to know how the 6K differs from a WRX ecu map, MY96 for boost pressure, ign. fuelling? It's just that I'm asking on behalf of a non-Snet member who has a STi2 running with a WRX ecu. Would this be OK i.e. safe or would the correct ecu give better, safer performance.

He's been told that the version 1, 2 & 3 are the same but I have a v3 ecu with 3 sockets and his ecu has 4 sockets.

Sorry to hijack the thread but it is ecu related.

I have only borrowed the W6 ecu to see if it would make any differance and as you say it doesn't seem to be any better. My next question is are there any other standard replacement ecu's off imports ect that I could simply plug in and get a boost in BHP from? I only ask as the ecu I have at present is off a Legacy turbo and although it seems to run fine im not sure if Im doing any damage using it, and would prefer to get one which I know is fine to run on my engine and if I can get extra power from it at the same time this would be an advantage

A Z4 would be the best standard ECU for a UK. It runs 12.7psi rather then 11.47psi and has a better boost control, timing a fueling map. It was what Prodrive used as a base map for the PPP.

A 6K runs a peak of 13.64psi, Z4 runs 12.7psi and the other common WRX ECU are W6, U8 and 2C. All these run 11.47psi.

An STi would certainly benefit from running the correct ECU. Not only due to the boost increase, but the STi map has more timing advance which the STi engine can handle better then a WRX.
