Hi, I've done a search but I can't find out how to change the oil on a 01 WRX.?
I know it's not as easy as draining and filling back up like other cars....so could someone please help...????

Warm up engine
Remove undertray
Drain oil
Remove filter
Replace with new filter, having pre-filled with oil.
Replace sump plug with new washer
Refill engine oil
Disconnect crank sensor.
Crank engine a few times to build up oil pressure
Run engine.
Turn off and let it stand for a couple of minutes, then recheck oil level

Forget all that bollox .... just do it as Subaru Main Dealers do it!!

Just give me a shout when you want me to come and 'sweep up' your big end shells.

You might think it's bollox, but it certainly won't do any harm, will it?

I service plenty of different makes/models of car, and prefill ALL the cannister type oil filters, and crank before firing up. - Even the filters that sit horizontally on the block, i make sure the element is well soaked in oil before screwing it on.

I do not want to entertain a bottom end rebuild on a customer's car because i didn't prefill the filter.

I know 2 people with totally standard Impreza turbos with FSSH, who have both suffered big end failiures immediately after service - Does that not say anything to you about the procedure Subaru Main dealers use?

Anyway, this nas been covered (extensively) by you before now, and from what i can see, you haven't a clue what you're talking about.

im no expert mate..............but do the **** oil change.........for the extra time it will take you,its not worth the risk not to!!!!.

**** maybe but I do it (as said) it takes all but 2 mins extra. If you think of the time PSL spends on SN you have to ask yourself why he wouldn't spend an extra 2 mins on a 'belt & braces' routine..! As for prefilling the filter... only a fool or a main dealer YTS wouldn't..!

When you find crank sensor, and it's very easy to find (the only connector) below the alternator, the easiest thing to do is just wiggle it, squeezing the spring clip, until it's almost disconnected but still lined up. This makes it a doddle to push back together.

The other thing is the CEL light may come on. Don't worry it will go out after 5 starts (mine did).

Why disconnect something when there is absolutely NO reason to whatsoever!!??

Its not the time, its the fact that you get the CEL on .... its the fact that you are playing with a connection that works perfectly OK before you touch it and move the plug ..... its the fact that its utterly pointless!!

But do it if you don't walk under ladders either!

But, I WOULD fill the Filter - Subaru says don't bother - I do!

One thing you must do is pre-fill the new oil filter. I even used to do that on my first car, a *cough*, ahem, Datsun Sunny! Ahh, the old days.
But, as for the crank sensor ****, well imho i think that is more pish than even mester lewis can talk. I cannot see what possible reason you would want to do that for, and would like a Subaru breaker, oops sorry, i meant fitter to come on here and explain it to me if they do it! Yeah i bet they do, LOL.

The idea is that because with the crank sensor disconnected the engine will not fire, you can build up oil pressure and distribute the oil without subjecting the bearings, especially big ends, to the loads they would otherwise encounter.

Following an oil change with out disconnecting the crank sensor i have certainly found it to be a rattly start. Can't be good. So imo you loose absolutly nothing by disconnection the crank sensor first. Belt and braces.

Just do as **** lewis does ie what the main dealer does, as they always know best.
Except when they don't say prefill the oil filter - you should do this as psl carries that procedure out despite their expert advice ! Dealer says don't disconnect crank sensor so don't do that.

Do a search for this topic and make your own mind up - probably the single most popular technical one on s'net : you'll get advice from those that know the engines very well as well as those don't but think that they do.

So if the point of disconecting the crank censor is so u can turn over the engine with out it starting to build oil pressure? then surely u can disconect anything that allows the engine to turn over but not fire?

i have allways done this on all cars ive owned, allways prefilled the filter and cranked it over with the crank position sensor disconnected or king lead removed. although i must say that the subaru is the worst for building up oil pressure!! takes a good 20+ secs of cranking before the oil light goes out.

Going to change my oil but would like to know 2 thinks. Why disconect the crank sensor and when you say crank the engine to build up oil pressure do you mean on the key with the starter motor but without the engine firing beacuse the crank sensor has been removed. Or do you mean crank with a spanner.

Disconnecting the sensor allows oil pressure to build and gives a chance for bearings, shells etc to get coated with oil prior to a full start, thus preventing excellerated wear and tear.
Crank engine on the key.
