I'M GOING MAD
Please Help,
Like many other people out there i'm thinking of changing my ECU.
The questions i've got to ask have all been asked before, but so many people
have so many different ideas, and have left me so confused.
Right here goes, i'v got a 99 uk spec imp, I've bought a scooby sport full decat
and a fancy air filter (not yet fitted).I'm not after massive power outputs due to very small budget poss 275bhp max.
I would like an Ecu that i could try and get my head around,i have no understanding how these things are mapped (Feel free to explain),so a basic ecu
would be best (No antilag crap or launch control thingymebob) just something that does exactly what it says on the tin. i also would like something that i could get mapped locally, I live in south yorks.
So if you can stop me from cracking up i would me exstatically happy,
but i need you to explain things in ******** terms.
Cheers Ian.
P.S I've got around £800 to spend,long shot i now.

Was in the same boat around 6 months ago mate. Your budget would certainly get an Apexi PCF mapped by AndyF. He's not local (Scotland) but travels for an extra fee. I shared his costs with others in my area which works out to be quite resonable.
I was a bit sceptical at first. My "bolt on" mods on MY97 had seen 296 bhp and 249 lbs torque. After the mapping session I was pleasantly surprised with 316 bhp and just short of 300lb. Certainly the best £750.00 I spent on the car and the mid range punch is simply fantastic.
You can also remap at any time should you decide to add further modifications when time/ money allows.
Best of luck. Bit of a minefield with varying opinion.................

http://shop.scoobynet.co.uk/Product.asp?ProductID=1063 should give you some ideas mate.
Andy is a very approachable guy as well and always makes time to answer your questions. I PM'd him a couple of times before making the decision to go ahead with the mapping session.
Search for some of "Peanuts" threads. I know he too has a MY99 and has similar praise for the product and Andy's mapping skills.
Also Carl Daveys thread in the Projects forum gives a pretty detailed insight.
I think I spent about £2500 all in all to get the engine producing it's current spec. Can be done a lot cheaper if you can buy the parts second hand and if you are good with a spanner, but I'm useless. Good with a pen behind a desk and thats about it.........................

3rd vote here for the Apexi/AndyF 'mod'
Agree with the guys above.
I race mine too, so Andy tailored the map to 'help' me to that bit extra.
( 407 bhp x 340 lbft, and you can drive it to Sainsbury's easy )
You can't/won't go wrong.
Buy from AndyF, get mapping free, just cover the travel or go to him.
He ventures to known locations/rolling roads during the week so worth contacting him.
3 of us had ours done on one day in the Midlands.
You will find him easy in Projects or the Scooby Shop.

One thought is the 'ecutek' ecu remap. The subaru PPP uses this to upgrade the ECU ,so i am told, In either scooby magazine or Japanese performance Roger Clarke used this on a 2.5ltr engine to give over 500bhp. Could be worth looking at their website to see if there is a agent near to you who you could visit and chat to. Have fun and get plenty of paracetamol.
