Advice please - VF29, 34, or 35?
I have a MYOO classic Impreza with TD04 and I wish to upgrade.
My priority is quick spool up rather than massive boost. I have uprated fuel pump, decat and panel filter, and will be re-mapped to TEK3 when it's fitted.
I was set on a VF28, but understand this has now been superceded by the 29. Then the 34 and 35 come and confuse me!
Advice greatfully received.
Keith

Hi Keith, i have a silver newage wagon and have spoken to you at various meets about how nice your car looks , anyway back to your question i have about the same setup as yours and the TD04 used to spool up at 2500 and pull strong but run out of puff at about 6000, i now have a VF34 (with a remap by Bob Rawle) and it drives completly different, it's starts to spool at 3000 and then hits very hard from 3500 right to the redline , with the TD04 it had 269bhp & 300lbs & as yet i have not had it on a rolling road with the VF34, i think if you want quick spool up stick with the TD04 but maybe have a word with Andy F as he seems to be getting good results from modified ones (check out Scooby Mag), hope this is of some help

Thank you both very much for responding - that's one for a 34 and one for a 35 so far. Granby - I must have a picture of your car then - wish I could remember you. Thanks for the comments on the car.

I have a my02 wrx with a vf35 turbo with a p18 exhaust housing as spec'd by RCM and tek3 by Bob Rawles
just got 320/320 ish on scooby clinic rollers and the car drives so well, just a little laggy at first but you get used to it
talk to Bob Rawles he's seen them all and he will give you the advise you need

think the vf35 spools quicker but has less top end as it has a smaller exhaust housing but dont hold me to that

Here u go Keith... just to settle the VF34 / VF35 issue :
VF34: The VF34 is similar to the VF30 but has improved spool up due to roller bearing design. This is the standard turbo on the New Age Sti RA Spec C. This turbo yields good throttle response and mid and top range power. It also uses a ball-bearing center section, which reduces friction and positively locates the shaft-wheel assembly to improve spool up and avoid turbo failure
The VF35 has identical internals as the VF30 and it uses divided thrust bearings. However, the exhaust housing is a P15 which means this turbo will have fantastic spool characteristics.

I ran a VF30 and 34 in my car , cant say there was a noticeable difference on road.
If i was doing the same now, on a limited budget, AndyF's Hybrid TD04 would be an excellent first stage of replacement.

Having driven Andy's TD04 car and lots of VFs, I would go for the TD04 as well. It punches classes above its weight, makes the engine feel bigger the way the power band works, and would be cheaper to implement than a twin scroll.
IIRC, VF36 and 37 are the JDM versions, ball and sleeve for Spec C and normal JDM respectively, VF39 is USDM STi 2.5 single scroll.

I'd go for this then Keith... If the VF34 is like the VF30 (as mentioned by someone earlier in this post), then I wouldn't do it.
I've driven a wagon with VF30 mapped by TSL and the spool up was way too slow for my liking. It took about another 3 to 4 car lengths to start pulling up my test hill (starting from 2,000rpm in 3rd), whereas the VF28 pulls about 1 car length later then the TD04.
Hmmm...TD04 Hybris..now where did I put my spare TD04 ????
