Default Boring Engine Oil Question

My Impreza has been serviced by Subaru Main Dealers since new - the Invoices say that the oil used has been Shell Helix

Can I get this oil anywhere?

Been in Halfrauds and in their listings they show Imprezas to 2000 use a different oil to the Imprezas from 2000 on ................ mine is a 2000, so not sure which is the correct one!!??

Mine is a MY00, un-modded UK Wagon, not thrashed, Oil changes every 6 months. Would the best be a quality 5W-30? 10W-40? 10W-50?

Cheers

Pete

for your car (with you wanting the same thing) then buy the 10w40..................

as you no doubt know they are referring to the classic shape >2000 and new-age 2000>...................

As above, the 10w40 semi synthetic is what is put in your car as standard
The 5w30 is fully synthetic, dont use it though as its too thin and there is a warning in your handbook about its use also.
As for where to get the oil, any good shell garage will have it on the shelf

You can use 10w-40 semi-synthetic although I would advise you to use either 10w-40 fully or 5w-40 fully synthetic. (Check the GB section for my Spring Oil Offers)

Pete,
10w40 is ok for your engine, DONT use 5 rated oils in turbocharged impreza's, you can use upto 15 rated, i personally use 15w50 motul 300v which is what STi recommend (their own oil brand is motul 300v 15w50 fully synthetic).
0 and 5 rated oils heat up quickly but they cannot take the heat out of the engine, so a slightly thicker oil is better.
Your handbook gives you the recommended oils to use, 10w40 is the lowest.

Thanks all - I did 'think' they meant the Classic to Bug-Eye changeover (but couldn't think why they would change the oil requirements on the same engine?)

I thought it was just the 0W-30 you shouldn't use? So, 5W is too thin too!?

OK, sorted in my head now 10W-40 it will be then!

Would Halfrauds 10W-40 Semi be fine? Or wouldn't you trust it?

Tony

So is not a 5w-40 the same as a 10w-40 at 100degC?

I think you'll find that they're both sae 40's. (viscosity 13-15cst at 100degC)

The "w" number is cold crank viscostiy, not the viscosity at 100 degC.

Compare these oils at 100degC

Motul 300V 5w-40.................Viscosity = 13.80cst
Motul 300V 10w-40................Viscosity = 14.00cst
Silkolene PRO S 5w-40............Viscosity = 14.89cst
Motul 8100 X-cess 5w-40........Viscosity = 14.00cst
Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5w-40....Viscosity = 13.60cst
Castrol Performance 10w-40.....Viscosity = 14.50cst
Silkolene XTR 10w-40 (semi).....Viscosity = 14.70cst
Mobil 1 0w-40........................Viscosity = 14.30cst
Motul 8100 0w-40...................Viscosity = 13.30cst

Checking the data, 5w-30's (sae 30's) have a range from 10-11cst and this is where the warning is applicable as the oil may not withstand the temps.

sae 50's have a range from 17-19cst.

Don't get confused as the "w" number is merely cold crank viscosity.

Cheers
