Classic hesitation
Hi,
I am reasonably new to scooby ownership - About a month now!!!! I have a classic 2000 impreza registered on the 24th December - Dont know if that puts it in problematic MAF territory or not!!!!
The trouble is the car has a slight hesitation when idling only when warm I think - It is only slight but after reading some posts got me a bit worried about the consequences. Is a slight hesitation normal?
The car was serviced about 1000 miles ago (60K) and so the plugs should have been replaced - I know the air filter was and the fuel filter but you never know!!!! Should I be worried about the hesitation? I carried out an ECU reset about 2 weeks ago and there were no fault codes whatsoever.
The car has the occasional surging when under slight throttle that I have read about but it seems that this is normal.
Also one other thing under full boost and high up the rev range changing from 2nd to third sometimes makes it feel like someone has cut power - It is not so bad if you give it more revs before letting the clutch out - I am not sure if this is to do with my driving style though!!!!
Any ideas?

Stuart,
The hesitation may well be down to a maf problem which can be resolved fairly cheaply for your year of car. Some people replace these as a service item yearly.
But, if I am right, the lambda controls the fueling when running closed loop at idle, so it could be this.
The hesitation at cruising speeds of 80 ish on my 98 WRX was cured by replacing the lambda. Food for thought. £35 I think I paid.
The sudden cut of power you mention is probably fuel cut. This is when too much boost is detected by the ecu resulting with the ecu protecting the engine by slowing it down (violently). Have you got an aftermarket boost controller? or has a pipe come off the wastegate?
Hope this helps
Wayne.

Thanks Wayne,
I never thought the hesitation was anything to worry about - It is so small. I may invest in a new MAF sensor anyway.
Could the fuel cut be to do with not backing off the throttle enough as I engage the clutch?
I dont have a boost controller - The car is standard - with regards to the wastegate what exactly does this do and where is it located - Will check tonight.
Thanks again
Stuart

OK - I have had a good look round and cant see any tubes not connected. The only thing I noticed is that the engine oil seems to be way over the full mark. I have read that it should only read half when warm - Is this correct?
Think I am gonna have to take it to a scooby garage to get checked over. Obviously the supplying garage is a muppet!!!!

Your wastegate is located on top of the turbo with an arm going towards the back of the car. It is there to direct the surplus exhaust away from the turbo and out of the exhaust to allow control over how much boost is developed. Varying the opening does this.
Your boost controller, if you have one, will probably be under the bonnet between the wastegate and turbo outlet.
As for the fuel cut.........I'm wondering if its simply a case of the sudden change from accelerating to pressing the clutch pedal. Cars of lesser power seem a lot smoother when doing the same. What I am saying is that it may not be fuel cut.Have you been in any other scoobs to see what they are like?

It is not so much engaging the clutch but when engaging 3rd gear and letting the clutch out there is a joltbefore it picks up again - It is quite harsh too. Makes you worry something is going to break!!!!
Something did break one of the first times I experienced it - There was a dodgy bearing on the air con tensioner and when it jolted, the bearing seized and snapped the belt!!!! I am running past Subaru to see if they will kindly drop some of the excess oil that appears to be in it - Have been running it smoothly till checked. I will give it a few go's and see what the conclusion is.
Would be useful to take someone out in it in the north east (Nr middlesbrough) ans see if theres is similar.

Basically in Yarm. Just got back from Subaru garage due to my oil seeming to be over filled - They dropped it and refilled it to the correct level. They estimate it had 2.5 litres too much in - I feel like going back to the reputable subaru specialist and giving him a punch!!!!
