INTERMITANT CRANK RUMBLE
TOOK CAR OUT OTHER WEEK ON A RUN ABOUT 4/5 MILES VERY STEADY(3 THOU REVS MAX) NOTICED VIBRATION ON G/STICK ON T/OVER POPPED BONNET DEFINATE SOUND OF CRANK RUMBLE CRAWLED HOME CHECKED OIL/WATER STARTED BACK UP NOISE STILL THERE CRAWLED TO MATES HOUSE GOT THERE NOISE GONE CAR RAN FINE +QUIET JUST DONE SHEFF TO LONDON + BACK NO PROBS CAME OUT OF WORK T/DAY HAMMERED CAR HOME SAME NOISE AGAIN THEN DISSAPEARED ANY IDEAS ANYONE (sorry car is a 96 uk imprezza turbo)

Any difference with the clutch pedal in or out? Clutch bearings can transmit noise through to the bottom end, and make gear stick vibe.
Engine mounts? Get a pry bar in there, and really give them a good work out, check for splits in rubber.
If above is all good, i would fit an oil pressure gauge if i was you, next time it happens check to see if there is any fluctuation in pressure, oil pump could be on it's way out. An oil pressure gauge is a good thing to have in you're cockpit anyhow, and could save you ££££££££££££££.
When was you're oil last changed?

Was the thrust bearing changed when the new clutch went in? The force of a new pressure plate on an old thrust brg could kill it in no time......just a thought!
Deffo a good plan to have a op gauge though.

if it was something mechanical i would have thought it would do it all the time ie bearings etc.it sounds to me like something that can alter and it lends itself to something like the electronic timing drifting retarding/advancing this can have strange effect on the engine sound...i am no expert but its one to think about powerman

I know what you mean, but such as an oil pump on its way out can give intermittent rumbles, ie. when under load, not delivering good pressure and starving vital parts of oil (oil starvation). Hence why i say fitting a op gauge is good insurance, and you can rule out alot of problems by monitoring the pressure when the problem occurs. If its ok then it's time to look elsewhere.
Does it still perform when you hear the rumble? Could it be that it's dropping onto 3 cylinders, that would make it sound rough as a dog. Or perhaps a coil pack intermittently tracking across onto the block, that would make your engine give a bit of a shudder as it temporarily went onto 3 then back onto 4. Does it still perform, thats the question?
