my car is leaking water and dont know from where, i first thought it was the top hose but after removal and inspection it seems fine, i also cleaned it inside and out where it attaches to the pipe. my problem really is this, i can let the engine get hot and the fan kick in over and over and theres no sprays or leaks but when i drive the car i am getting steam from the front left hand side, (i think) as you look at it. i am pretty sure its coolant as it stinks to hell.
please please advise where to look next.

Have you checked your header tank??
If your got a classic its a common problem for the plastic header tank to split. It's just happened to my, my93 wrx. I had the same problem as you. Run the car on the drive no steam, drive the car and smelly coolant steam from under the bonnet. Found my header tank was leaking at the seam.

is that the metal 'pot' with a filler cap on?? mind you i drove it steady on a 20 mile run and its fine, gave it some boost on way home and it did it again.. on reading up i have read it could be the head gasket (although the oil is clean as a whistle).
help me!!

hi mate my car did this for ages my 95 jdm, i had steam coming out from scoop stunk like mad it ended up being the radiator, drivers side they have plastic end tanks and they split its a common problem, i ended up getting an uprated radiator with stainless steel end tanks, they're not cheap cost me £250.00

unfortunately i am at a loss as it doesnt seem to leak or steam unless ive been driving hard.. so this puzzles me as most leaks will kick in when the engines hot.. i let it tick over for ages and the fan kicked in three to 4 times with no leak.

Some times you have that.
The header tank leak opens up when the car is given a blast and seals perfectly when idle/cruising.
Try looking for this before going the gasket route.
My gaskets went and the oil was perfect.
Do you have small bubbles comming through into the filler tube just in front od the battery? Bubbles will occure after, during and even will carry-on when the engine is switched off after a hard run!
Is there coolant all over that area, even down the side of the car after a hard blast?
Gasket job is about £600 so worth trying all the simple stuff first.
Graham.
