Default Spraying Advice

I have just mastered the art of spraying, on a white escort van using cellulose (not sure if spelt right) paints.

Just wondered if there is any difference between spraying a normal paint colour such as white to spraying a metallic colour such as Mica Green.

If so whats involved.

Cheers

Craig.

Didn't think you could use cellulose paints anymore - thought they all had to be water based (why a lot of bodyshops are putting out **** work at the mo whilst they get used to it!)

Boys boys boys

I used to be a Prof painter.

Cellulose is the "old style" paint, not chemical resistant, doesnt cover as well as two pack, and loses it's shine unless you polish it like every week.

go into your paint shop with the colour code, they will mix up your base coat. Generally, you mix basecoat 50:50 with "basecoat thinners"
Then, totally different application to cellulose and solid colours (e.g white)
apply light "misty " coat first, then followed by a wettish one, another wettish one (dont get any runs for christ sake ! and then give it another nice misty one over the top,
Then, let it dry, put your clear on "two pack clear, not cellulose"
Two pack clear, mixed 2-1 generally, but check, as i've seen some that are 3-1 and 4-1 .
Clear= 2 wet coats.
well, 1 coat, let it tack off, about 5-10 mins
then another nice finisher one.
allow to harden for a few days, flat it all down with 1500-2000 sandpaper, buff it all up with G3 and a buffer, and hey presto. It'll be mint.

Hope this helps.
Dont ask if i fancy doing a foreigner, got out of paint work, no way i wanna go back to it ! I only do stuff for my own car's now etc...

Just to confirm.

1. Mix basecoat (50:50)
2. Apply light misty coat
3. Apply wet coat No 1
4. Apply wet coat No 2
5. Apply light misty coat on top
6. Leave to dry
7. Mix two pac clear (2:1 Generally but check !!)
8. Apply one clear wet coat
9. Leave to tack off (10-15mins)
10. Apply finishing clear wet coat
11. Leave to harden for a few days
12. Flat down with 1500-2000 sandpaper (presume wet and dry)
13. Buff up with G3 and buffer.

you got it.

if it all goes wrong, dont blame me !!

the tacking of of the clear (10-15min) depends on the weather, If it is hot, obviously it speeds it up, if its freezing, it takes longer.
same for basecoat, let it dry between the coats.

best way to check lacquer is touch the masking close to where your spraying,
if is pi55 wet threw, leave longer, if it is stringy etc.. its nearly there. doesnt have to be bone dry, just stringy, or tacky.

i think i should mention that spraying 2 pack paint products is seriously bad for your health if u do not wear full protective clothing and mask. 2 pack contains isocynate which can/will cause cancer. i have been spraying for 14 years, and have seen many changes from cellulose to 2 pack to water based. it not the basecoat that causes the damage, its the laquers/primers as they contain hardeners.

also, it is highly illegal to spray 2 pack products without a controlled enviroment like a spray booth. the E.P.A (environmental protection act) can fine up to £25,000 for acts of neglect to the enviroment.

not trying to scare anyone, just explaining some facts.

good luck with your project

so does smoking, do you do that??

Don't put the first coat of laquer to wet, and try to use a fast hardner if in an uncontrolled enviroment (you will lose a little finish quality but you won't notice) other wise the laquer keeps flowing after the application (nice finish turns to runs).

Good luck
