Question 18" Wheels mess up handling. True or False?

Can someone explain just how larger wheels affect the handling and to what extent. I've got 18"s on one of the scoobs and it seems fine. But fair enough I don't really hoon it round as its rush most of the time here ;-)

Ta!

im not sure on a scooby doo, as 18's dont actually look that big on them IMO. iv got 18's on mine but iv never driven it with anything less so i cant answer your question directly!

but my old car which was a mk1 2.0 16v clio had 17's on for a while, and it completely destroyed handling and accelleration! They came off pretty quick and back to 15's which made it feel like a completely different car!

The only problem I have at the mo, is 18's are the smallest that fit due to the size of the brakes! doh!

Its normally the extra weight of bigger wheels that affects the handling.

Dave.

CJ: I was looking forward to the longer ratios as its a jap ;-)

Yeah, unsprung weight, thats what I thought. Only thing I could think of apart from tramlining. They weight a ton each!

Cheers

On a new age 18's are fine, the car is designed for them.

Personally I wouldn't run 18's on my classic, though many do. The primary contributing factor to the handling is you have to run very low profile tyres, especially on a classic, new age have bigger arches to accomodate. The sidewalls of the tyre act as an additional spring in the suspension, everything is designed around having that liitle bit of extra deflection in the tyres. So by going to a really low profile 18" you lose most of that extra spring, hence the handling is not so good.

I ran 18's on my classic, and after swapping them to 17's for a short spell, i found that the 17's were better for the handling.

Both sets of wheels had same make/model of tyres too.

Not sure about a classic, but bear in mind Prodrive recommend 18's as part of the handling pack on top of the PPP.

Regards,
Shaun.
