Question AC Removal???

I want to remove the air-con from my '97 Turbo.

The reasons being threefold :-

1) The belt squeals like a b*stard
2) It needs re-gassing
3) I never use it anyway

Has anyone here done this themselves, and can offer some advice or maybe a quick walkthrough?

Thanks

My Dad had a similar issue with an old Corvette, which he wasn't able to get spares for. All he did was remove the a/c belt, effectively isolating the system. He doesn't remember doing anything else other than removing the fuse, and the car ran on for many years with no problems until he sold it.

It's not that easy if you want to keep the enviroment!!

It really does not add that much weight (relativly to a 1,500kg car) so my suggestion would be to remove the belt and leave it installed.

Otherwise you will have to let all the gas out (really bad as the gas will be (I think due to age of car) CFC based). Then remove the pipes, pump, radiator, rad fan, and condenser. Then find new gromits for the bulkhead, cover for the AC button on the dash and the WORST JOB: replace the airbox with a non-AC unit (without the cooling matrix). All in about 3 hours MIN.

ie: FAR TOO MUCH hassel if (IMHO).

Just loose the belt!!

Dan is right, BUT, if you must....(as I did)

1
Get a professional A/C man to the car, and have him properly vacumme the system out, about £30 tops. Fine if you are caught dumping is £2000+!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2
Remove the flex hoses from the bulkhead, can be a tight fit, but can be done. Plug the unions.
3
Remove the rad top supports and remove the A/C condenser rad. It's quite big and very fragile, so easy to damage!
4
Remove the drive belt and compressor.
5
Leave the under dash coil there, too much hassle, and you just might want to fit it all again.
6
Job done.

Realy easy, but taking the belt off is simpler; mine was noisey due to the bearing in the magnetic clutch groaning.

i have fitted it to mine so reversal of proceedure.
not that bad a job!
worst bit is evaporator behind dash!
most people just leave that in.
is it twin airbag model or earlier 97?
gas will be r134a HCFC NOT CFC these are pre 93 cars!
but still massive fine and possible imprisonment if caught venting anyway!
plus very dangerous due to risk of frost burns!
get it professionally recovered and vacced out!
if yor local to Leeds i will check it for you .free

Hmm... Thanks for the info guys - it does sound like a lot of hassle!

I think I'll just remove the belt and get the system vented, for the time being.
Then I can have a go at it when I've got nothing better to do..

@911 Cheers for the walkthrough <Page Bookmarked>

@SilverSonic Nowhere near Leeds, but thanks for the offer...
