Default 4* petrol

I have a friend who still uses 4* petrol. Yes it really is available at a small number of outlets! I think he's paying about £1.04 per litre. He reckons that when mixed with Optimax it provides an even better (powerful) mixture. Has anyone else tried this on their (de-cat'd) car? What are the feelings about using 4* anyway - is it safe on a decat'd engine - I see no reason why it would cause any damage?
