Default Help - Strange Noise on Startup.

Anybody any ideas on this one please:

Turn the key, starter motor kicks in, car starts. Then a loud screech noise. Lasts only a split second and only happens at startup.

I reckon it could be the starter motor sticking on but I don't really know what to do about it. Is it worth taking the starter out and giving it a clean up? If so how tricky a job is that?

Thanks for any help\advice

Alternator belt slipping? Try taking up the slack and then tightening the alternator.

I've had a quick look at the alternator belt and it seems nice and tight. I would have thought it would slip at other times and not just startup? Will give it another look see anyhow.

mine used to do it and it was the alternator belt, although it felt tight enough.

If the belt is old it can slip even though the tension is right. Think they must become polished and hard. Daz

If the vehicle's battery voltage is low and/or the starter motor is drawing too much current, then the alarm system's siren may bleep - BUT ONLY DURING CRANKING. I dont think this siren bleep could be confused with a screach, such as that from a slipping belt or sticking pulley.

When this first started I did get several occurences of the alarm bleeping as the engine began to crank. I then started to get the noise just after the engine fired.
I've checked the belts and I'm sure it's not them. I've had the car started with my head stuck under the bonnet and I'm convinced it's coming from the starter.

Will check the battery voltage but I reckon it's the starter giving in. So any clues as to a price for a new one?
