Question MAF cleaning, what fluid?

What fluid is recommended for cleaning the maf sensor, as I don't want to damage it
I have petrol and thinners, will they do the job?

Cool

i would be very careful of attempting to clean the sensor wire, as if it has been contaminated with oil, from an air filter, it may well of burnt onto the wire, so any amount of cleaning will not remove it.
For the price of such an item, its far simpler to replace than clean it and risk damage.

What year is it? The first types are a little more robust than the later types. I did mine just by squirting copious amounts of Brake cleaner over it..

Mines the first type, IMHO its easier to get the second type new even if you have to get it mail order to get just the sensor for £77. To replace mine its £270.

Its a 95 sti ra (must be the expensive one) with a hks racing suction kit filter, I dont think hks use oil on their filters, but not to sure.

take the cone off the filter, give it about 3500 revs, and spray brake / carb cleaner for a few seconds. should clean it up nicely.

don't try to clean it by touching it as it will get very expensive.....

On the VAG boards they have probs with the mafs - their solution is to take maf off, drop it in a bag of alcahol (no not lager) - this is from a chemist or electrical shop?, swish it about a bit, take out of bag and let it dry out then replace on car

IMO,this is a bit of a gamble.

I had a new sensor on a my99 that was cleaned with alcohol, and a little while later the engine died. After replacing the engine,it wouldnt idle and a new sensor cured the problem. However this is on the my99 with the bosch sensor, and not the earlier Jap sensors.

The earlier ones are meant to be stronger and perhaps will work (as suggested above)if cleaned.

If you have any problems,I have a s/h MAF sensor for the my93>98.

Agreed its a bit of a gamble although if its duff already then there's nothing to lose.

I would be relying on an AFR gauge to check if its broken and if the cleaning had fixed it or worsened it, where on boost fuelling is concerned.

Is it definately broken or do you just fancy cleaning it?

I just noticed that thinners and carb cleaner have been suggested above.
I would not reccomend these atall, they will probably damage a good maf (ok you will get it clean mind you).

I am interested too,to know why you feel the need to clean the maf,the HKS filters have been known for allowing small particles of dirt to enter the system and damage the MAF (or worse the engine) although they provide a very high flow.

The reason for cleaning the maf sensor is I had to remove the sensor and induction inlet pipe because I've been fabricating an alloy air box to enclose the hks filter, to help reduce induction temp ,with a forced cold air feed from the front bumper from either the fog/spot cover or below the indicator.....you did ask......and that's when I noticed it was covered in oily sh*te. As for the hks filtration, we have more wet days than dry dusty days in the UK so I'm not that worried. lol

Factory air box is best for cold air feed
