Unhappy TD05 LAG.....Help

Since the TD05 upgrade i have started noticing sooo much Lag..that i can almost count the seconds till the turbo kicks in..at 3500rmp...

Is there a way of reducing the Lag?

I have a powerfc, but still runing on the standard TMIC..

Any advise most welcome..

Welcome to TD05 land , You could fit a lighter flywheel which would marginally help, full decat Etc, But im afraid without a remap & even then it will always be around that rpm

My Current Mods are:

Apexi ECU mapped to 1.25 bars
Apexi Power FC Commander
Apexi POT 3 Boost Solenoid Kit
Apexi Induction Kit sti 5
Manual Boost Control Kit - Fitted by Andy to stabilise the boost
Iridium Spark Plugs
Walbro Fuel Pump
Walbro Fuel Pressure Regulator
Blitz Nur-Spec R System 4” Tail with Jap Innovations De-Cat Down-Pipe
TD05 FE Turbo
Helix Oil Catch Can

Originally mapped by AndyF when I had the TD04, but I found that his map with the TD04 gave me little Lag, so I played with the ignition map slightly and it was better...

Though Andy is on Holiday at the moment, I think he is back in another week will get him to map it again...

At present, My ID meter has registered 335BHP, though when the Turbo eventually comes in at 3500rpm, it cooomes in very strong....!

The question is can the mapping reduce the Lag?

What you describe is not lag it is a higher boost threshold than you would like.

When you say no boost till 3500rpm what gear is this in and what boost does it reach by this RPM.

A well sorted TD05 with a TMIC and OEM headers should reach 1bar by about 2800 in 5th, 3000 in 4th, 3300 in 3rd, may be slightly sooner if you're lucky/clever...

You are comparing the TD05 to a TD04 & they are so different , the TD04 has Very little Lag but runs out of Puff top end, As stated the TD05 will vary throught the gears & boost threshold Etc

Lets not even talk bout the 5th gear, since Andy last mapped it, the boost creeps real slow...In 5th for a fact, 1 bar hits at 3500rpm, if not later...

Problem may actually be due to the manual boost controller....(though not confirmed)

I was thinking of ripping out the Manual boost controller, and also investing in a Apexi ACVr to control the boost...

What controls at what point the boost kicks in?

Power FC Question:
Initial Boost on the Powerfc is set to 1.20 and the duty is 58

If i increase the duty, when i get to 3rd gear and accelerate the boost overshoots over 1.28 bars...

Do any of the boost setting in the PFC help the turbo spool up quicker?

Anyone know when Andy's back...?

PS: Witout a doubt, the TD05 does not run out of Puff.....

Is ther a garage i can go to, to confirm if the Up-pipe is leaking or not?

I can hear a noise, but not sure if it is the up pipe or not..

My heat shield used to rattle, but now suddenly that has stopped, i can hear this crackiling sound that travels up the steering colum from within the bay when i turn the wheel and hold it..

just want to make sure that it is an actual leak and not vibration..

In all fairness though Sam, you can blatantly hear the blowing from the joint in the up pipe.

This may or may not be of any use / interest to you but I had a problem with the TD04 on my car, even after fitting a manual boost controller the boost was still quite slow to rise. It became even more obvious after de-catting the car that the boost would rise near instantly to 0.5 bar and then crawl up the rest of the way. Even disconnecting the pipe to the wastegate actuator had no effect - still the same. The fix was to tighten the wastegate actuator rod by about 1.5 turns - Bingo - nice snappy boost rise and still holding the same boost as before.

As I say, it may be something completely unrelated on your car, but if the wastegate actuator rod is too slack the wastegate won't be held firmly shut and the boost will be slow to rise.

You cant have the best of both worlds...
I like my td05...its mapped to start pulling at 2800 and hard by 3000... fully by 3500 rpm.(Andy F)
APexi fc and dawes, running 1.3 bar holding 1.1 at redline.
287 bhp....And brill torque curve no flat spots.

It can vary from car to car but in top gear 1bar at 2900-3100 in 90% of cases. This is approx 500rpm up on the TD04 but then the useable rpm range extends to 7k instead of running out around 6k.

Andy

ps - when I originally mapped Sams car it was on a td04 turbo, the settings would not be ideal for a td05.

sam- a blown up pipe gasket kills power and spool, my advice would be to get the up pipe sorted ASAP and get the car to andy for a re-map, you said you have played with the advance, how much have you added to help the spool???

The way you drive changes with a TD05, though yes it is laggy, the top end is great, where as the TD04 used to run out of power the td05 seems to go on forever..petty i have to change gears really...

The AVCr that i got did help...

The Up-Pipe was changd by XtreemeScoobies...Gaskits were also changed...though not sure if the H&S Up-Pipe was required, though made a huge difference to the spoolup and the noice....

What rpm are you now getting 1 bar at? I have a similar setup to yourself and according to Andy's laptop, we got 1 bar at 2860rpm and full boost (1.25ish) by 3000ish. IIRC, Andy also adjusted the actuator arm a couple of turns which brought the boost in much sooner as it was over 3000 for 1bar originally.

I don’t think my boost comes in as early as that…

Something I have never checked again, as I am so used to it, though it does sometimes annoy me, as I feel full boost does not come in till 3500rpm. Never seen 1 bar under 3000rpm that for definite…

Never thought of adjusting the actuator arm. What are the consequences? (if any)

I am not getting full boost (1.35 bar) till 4000rpm but when it does wow! all the way to redline. Is the the same for all with a TD05 or can it be adjusted with the actuator to spool up quicker?

BTW I am still very happy its on my car

be careful with the actuator arm, turn it in too far and you wil induce boost creep up the top end.

I am quite sure you see 1 bar by 3000rpm in 4th gear, I will check though.
