Dense black smoke.......
.....and loss of power.
Checked the oil, not even on the dipstick.
Put more oil in, upto the high level, even more black smoke.
Still drives but only just.
Please dont tell me my Cherry is dead...
Could it be something simple like a breather pipe, the fact that the oil was so low may be due to the fact that I havent checked it in three years, so it dosent necassarily mean its all gone in one go.
I wouldnt mind too much but Ive just put a new exhaust on the thing, I washed it on Sunday and filled it up with petrol.
Help please, this car has saved me from untold door dents in its time, and its not ready to die.

As Above
When I was playing with the fueling on mine during racing I was getting lots of black smoke on lift-off. All sorted now thanks to Bob.
Watch for bore wash if it is over fueling.

Might be utterly blocked air-filter or knackered choke. Also could be a stuck float in the carb. Try taking the air filter etc. off and see if it's better. Check that the choke works too.

Started it up this morning and its as it was, no smoke, and drives OK.
Whats that all about ?
Last week the top hose split, and it was driven home (6 miles or so) with no water in it.
Could this be part of the problem, the top hose was replaced/water topped up and the car has been used a couple of times since yesterdays black smoke episode with no reports of any smoke, but it was driven by my other half, so she may not have noticed it was doing a James Bond.
Just to remind you this is a Nissan Cherry as I stated earlier, so I think overfueling wont be the problem, although it is the sports model, a Spirit 1.3 SGL.......
Answers on a postcard please......

Its not a joke.....Yesterday loads of black smoke and poor running, today perfect.
As for the exhaust I plumbed for a twin silenced jobbie with a 22mm tail pipe, it looks a bit like a McDonalds straw, but in silver.
After consulting my work collegues during first break, we as a group came to the conclusion that it was a 'stuck ring', which decided to stick due to the overheating episode, and then decided to unstick this morning.
After paying £50 for this prestige vehicle 3 years ago I have grown rather attached to it, it gets left at the local train station most days, and gets abandoned at the pub from Friday night to Sunday morning. I teach my 12 year old niece to drive on the farm in it, and basically it gets abused. But it never lets us down, starts first time, has an allergy to petrol and flies through its MOT. I would imagine it has caught 50plus door dings in its time, and thats a few saved on my Sub.
In fact, after this little scare I think I will give it a ' full hit ' on Friday, oil, filters, plugs, Feu Orange.........
With a bit of TLC I may get another 3 years out of it.
By the way you may scoff, but its in the best colour........Racing Black.

If its ok now...then it sounds like a sticky float needle on your carb.
Give the bottom of the carb a good wack with big end of a screwdriver next time it happens!
Don't worry about the oil...beacuse you can't see it on the dipstick, doesn't mean there is non in. Remember it usually takes about 3 litres of oil from empty and it still wont show on the dipstick until you put 4th litre in

Problem with changing the oil after so long is the nice fresh oil washes the crap from between the bearings & journals. Could end up sounding like a bag of nails (if it doesn't already). Happened once with a friend's Peugeot
