Default Tapping noise

Hey all, just noticed a slight tap with my95 sti ra. Its only when im next to a wall or another car i can hear it,(echo?) sound like hydraulic tappets. Have had my oil changed + a cambelt done is there anything else to check? my mechanic says its normal and that all scoob are naturally tappetty. What do yous think??
Cheers.

You get this all the time?

Mine sounds "tappety" for a minute or so in the morning but then disappears. Invariably an oil change sorts this for a couple of months but it eventually comes back. Heard this is common though (MY97).

My other tapping (that I hear near walls and roundabouts etc) seems to have come since i went for the full decat. Not the same tapping sound though if that makes any sense. More like a heat shield or something. Will have to get it looked at.

Cam belt tensioner (did you change it with the cambelt?) or piston slap if it's only the first few minutes the morning, otherwise could be a couple of thinks (injectors, tappets etc).

On my last car the injectors were very tappety. When you drove past a wall you could here them.

Don't all STi engines come with solid lifters? Hence no tappet noise?

Ooh right, sorry. My legacy makes this noise all the time, having changed to a tinner oil its made it quieter now.

Make sure the oil grade is correct, thats my advise.

just out of interest, does it go away when you turn the wheels? i have the same noise but it's coming from my power steering pump, mine disappears when i turn the steering wheel

or it could be as they've said above, quite common on the earlier cars, had 2 legacy's that had the noisey tappets syndrome

Certainly on sports, not to sure about WRX + models. <96 had hydraulic tappets, post 97 had adjustables.
