I have recently fitted k/l on MY93. Placed the sensor under the i/c as advised.

Connected up the unit and can only get 2 green lights when the block is hit pretty hard with spanner. (Sensitiviy at max)

I have read the post regarding dodgy soldering on some units and mine seems to be fine.

Can anyone help? I have had problems with a crap earth before so have ran a wire back to the battery from the unit. Should I do the same with the sensor itself or would this not work?

Tap the bolt holding the sensor on with a screwdriver handle... lightly to start with a see if the lights increase as you tap it.. I got mine to light big red with no problem when i fitted it.. and have tested it by making the car det lots since

Another test is to Go for a drive, get the car warmed up, stick the clutch in and bounce it off the limiter a couple of times. This will usually get you a big red on the older cars.

thats a really good idea stress the engine and risk blowing it up to test something he just fitted to try and stop him blowing the engine up.. lol

Hmm - The screwdriver 'tapping' the sensor bolt sounds a much more favourable technique

Cheers

OK. I tried the 'safer' option as I had a screwdriver handy. Managed to get all lights including 'big red' although when tapping the block adjacent to the sensor I can only get 2 greens.

The sensitivity setting doesn't make much difference. Should it?? Am I right in thinking clockwise is max setting, anti is min?

Sounds about normal then..

I believe it is clockwise to max.. I think there is a little arrow on it..

check it is bolted down flush to the block..

OK, so how do you know how hard to hit the bolt with the screwdriver to assess the calibration? Bouncing off the limiter once is no great hardship (anyone who claims they have never done it is lying) though I agree I would hardly condone doing it all the time.

The "rev" test confirms that it is actually detecting any det \ nasty noises as you're actually creating an engine noise rather that "tapping the bolt" or "tapping the engine", both of which are inconclusive if you're worried your mounting location / technique is incorrect.

Note, I'm not saying there is nothing wrong with tapping (though if you tap too hard, you can desensitize the piezo transducer, but that's a VERY hard tap...hammer? ).

Thanks for the info guys.

I have now tested using the unit by bouncing off the limiter. I got 2 green lights at 5500rpm and 2 amber at limit. Big Red never made a show.

I was expecting more activity as I have read posts where people can tell a bad batch of fuel from their k/l.

Should I now be happy?
