Default What turbo options do i have?

Hi,
i have a my94 wrx saloon, which has a td04 on it. i don't know why. looking to upgrade turbo as i have been told on many occassions that the td04 will only hold a constant 12.5 psi. what turbo's are a direct replacement, i'm aware of the td05 but are any of the vf range? any help would be gratefully received. thanks in advance.

Your 94 wrx saloon should have a TD05 turbo on it, the wagon has a TD04 turbo, check what ecu you have.

Id put the original ecu back, go to somewhere like grade a subaru and source a TD05 turbo then put the Z4 ecu in, you should notice the difference

DOH!
Off the top of my head i cannot tell you but if you just state your model (and the fact it should have had a TD05 turbo on, thus the different ecu) they will be able to provide the one you need

You can bolt it straight on but make sure if you purchase a TD05 it comes with the coolant pipes and oil pipes as I believe they are different sizes.

The turbo which is currently fitted - does it have the 90 degree elbow on the compressor cover? If so to retain your current setup you will require a TD05 with the elbow but an FE could be 'adapted' to fit
If you refit a TD05 as already mentioned you will need to fit the original ECU as the boost map and duty cycle maps are different and will cause problems with overboost.

Cheers

how will the z4 cause problems? i thought that the later models (ie my96) had these as standard with the td05 turbo and produced 260ps on 100 ron fuel. surely by changing my td04 and w6 to the td05 and z4, i'm just updating my turbo and ecu. any help, as i don't follow, and i could do without any det problems.

I agree that the TD05 should run with the Z4. I think when delboy says 'original ECU' he means the original saloon ECU designed to work on the TD05, not the one you may have which I guess is for the TD04

I bought a TD05 from Grade-A for 250, then sent it to turbo dynamics for checking and conditioning and got a bill for 380!!!! for that as the seals were buggered. Total cost 630! Perhaps I was unlucky to get a damaged one and you might get away without reconditioning but many people say that it is not a good idea in the long-run to use second hand turbos unless reconditioned.
Turbo dynamics sell re-conditioned TD05 turbos for 680 so you cold say I saved myself 50 quid. They sell brand new ones for 750.

Exactly what i mean't
Others have used VF series turbo's but they have different flow characteristics so not a direct replacement so will require the boost/duty maps changing to suit
The TD05 is prolly the best option

Cheers

VF turbos have their waste-gate actuator positioned more vertically above the turbo and I believe you have to mod the heat shield cover a little if fitting one.

Plus you can always upgrade the td05 at a later date with Andy F............... when you get bored..... Of course you'll have to uprate the injectors as well as other bits and pieces!!
