Default TD05 vs VF Turbos

Out of interest which of these turbos would see the most acheivable power gains.Ive heard the VF30 is one of the best IHI turbos for performance but is this a standard turbo or a hybrid? also how does the VF30 compare to the TD05

cheers

the TDO5 is cheaper to buy, cheaper to repair, more reliable but spools a little later, it will hold much higher boost without exploding, oh did i say its cheaper

i would take a TDO5 over any VF turbo

I thought the spool up was only 500 revs further up the range max.

td05's are getting rarer.
somebody keeps snapping them up!
then you need a front entry conversion, allow say £350 all in for a good condition second hand unit converted.
cant comment on ihi vf's but while the exchange rate is good why not have a look over the pond(usa).

Tell me this was Daren signing in incorrectly?

I have bad experience of VF turbo's - they are crap.........espcially the laggy ones that seem all too common from Turbo Dynamics....................

i.e. loads of lag and poor peak power........you know the ones..............

Wish I hadnt changed the td05/06 now........... just needs to have the exhaust side sorted to stop the surging...... nastiness

What's the benefit of making a TD05 front entry ... apart from straighter air flow? Much improvement in airflow / torque / power?

How much work would it be to fit a FE turbo to a scooby with original 90 degree entry turbo ... I know Andy F supplies a 90 degree Samco to mate up with existing pipework for 05/06 20g turbos on these poor beasts ...
IIRC it means lifting manifolds etc?

As per my question - do the front entry TD05's perform better?

Probably around 10bhp in it at the limit between 90 degree and FE on a TD05

Thanks Andy, was wondering, now I see it is just to fit in a TD05 to later cars .. hehe at last a benefit of a 90 degree inlet car!!
Does this drop apply to your 05/06 20G items too? with the "adaptor" samco hose for 90 degree inlet systems?

Not an answer to your question but some info for TD05 buyers out there.

I should be getting my TD05 back from turbo dynamics at the end of the week. Cost me 250 for the turbo from Grade-A (a bit much but I wanted one NOW), and then 150 for a recondition, so 400 all in (and then VAT) for a perfectly running TD05.

Can't wait to get it on my MY94 wagon which has a TD04 at present.

You WILL notice the difference - it is a bit later to respond when you hit the loud pedal ( 300 - 500 rpm later in my case with OBX tubular headers and big up-pipe ) but when it gets to boost, it GOoooes !!! Far faster than the TD04, albeit I have other supporting mods like STiV TMIC & undertray & I/C water spray, walbro fuel pump and reg, full decat exhaust with splitter, samco hoses etc.

But I had to change ECU Map to support it, as my TD04 map was overboosting and showing some det at 3000 - 4500 rpm ... TD05 map works fine, held 17 - 17.5 PSI, great once going!

I've got a VF30 on my 98 wagon. Not too bad a turbo, pulls nicely.

But, have been lured into one of Andys TD05/06's (again)
So the VF30 will be off if anyone wants to try it. (as long as they dont blow it up)
