Hi there,

My car has over the last few months started to get this annoying rattle (once warmed up) when you lift off the accelerator.

If you dip the clutch then noise goes. Engage clutch and rattle is back.

It's going into the dealer in 2 weeks time.

Any ideas as to the problem ?

Do you mean whilst you're in gear, and the car is decelerating? Or whilst idling in neutral?

probaly coz les revs when clutch dipped and therefore less vibration..........sounds like my car exactly and im sure its a heat sheild ill let you know at the weekend

I hope its a heatshield and not something like a clutch plate bearing..

Car went into dealer last week for a preliminary check.

Its going to be a gearbox out job. Booked into dealer for 4 days in a couple of weeks time to be sorted. Gonna give me a car for that length of time too.

Can't wait for it to be sorted

My car did this, it was a corroded exhaust heat shield which was loose.

I have no exhaust heat shelids so it cant be that with mine, I will get to have a look underneath next weekend so will investigate then.

Sounds just like the release bearing tbh, not an issue at all...
It is the play in the bearing, it can be solved if you lubricate the sleeve that the bearing slots into but it would be a waste of money to fix a noise that isnt causing a prob (apart from annoyance perhaps)

You will probably find that the noise may get slightly louder if you push the clutch pedal about 5mm (ie, not puching clutch yet, just free play) this is when there is the least ammount of load on the bearing.

Pedal fully up and there is a slight bit of push pressure holding it from rattling, obviously when you push the clutch in it has the pull pressure to stop it rattling...


Lol, went off on a bit of a rambling session there...

Basically nothing to worry about.

Had something similar in my old rover and it turned out to the central exhaust pipe - although your problem sounds a little different - tweenierob's post sounds most relevant though.

*Update*

Car has been into dealer for 4 days. On advice of Subaru UK they fitted a new clutch release bearing.

Its made jack all difference to the rattling noise. And the dealer said to me that they new it wouldn't make a difference, but had to fit under the advice of Subaru.

Anyhow, next stage is that they are booking the senior Subaru technician to come and visit and look at the car to sort it.

Not sure when that will be though

Next bet is the wastegate paddle then, as your car is under warranty i wont tell you how to fix it

But if you did want to have a look at it yourself, tap the actuator arm with a screwdriver and see if you can hear the noise

9 times out of ten it is the heatshield, have you also elliminated the other probs being left with this as your only reason?

Not being funny...

The way to resolve a loose paddle is to tighten up the tension on the actuator rod, or if it is an early car you have to add some preload by bending the actuator bracket to pull the paddle shut so that it cannot vibrate.

You have to make sure you only tighten the rod enough to make the paddle stay tight to stop it vibrating, too much and it will overboost..

I woudl also go for heat shield. The one on the up-pipe is quite hidden and can make this exact same vibrating noise on deceleration. It is like a sheath around the pipe and if the joins rust through then it just rattles around on it.

Some people rip em off. My solution was to drill a couple of small holes into the heat shield at stategic location and then screw in a blunt self tapping screws which press up against the downpipe holding it rigid and stopping the rattle

Sos not read all of it as its late - itsc more than likely one of the sheilds by your oil filter or the turbo shield, Bl###y annoying isnt it, took me ages to find my rattle in the end i layed under the car knocking the exhaust while a m8 lokked/listened in the engine bay - turned out to be the turbo sheild.

I had this, mine was a broken heat sheild on the exhaust uppipe.

*update*

Car was in dealers today. Top technician from Subaru attended to test drive the car to listen to rattle. Apparently they have heard this noise before !

Anyhow, collected the car this afternoon and dealer told me that they will now get a report from Subaru as to the next step, and had been assured that the rattle in no way would cause any future problems with the car. They also said that if the box was stripped then they may not actually see the fault anyway.

So the long and short at the moment is that I have to await the report.

The rattle continues to bug me....

5 weeks later and still waiting to here back from the dealer to see what the Subaru guys report says.

I've sent them 4 or 5 emails but no response, so I will be taking a trip to them this week to find out why the bloody hold up.

Rattling is now worse. Very prominent in 3rd and 4th and now you can hear it in 5th.

'supertouring' PM'd me saying his dealer replaced his clutch/flywheel again and now his rattle has gone.

So, at this moment in time, I'm not happy and want this resolved.

just to add, I had this prblem recently and helped reduce it by adding more gearbox oil. Only about 3/4 of a litre but it had almost stopped it completely, just a few little noises now and again - a lot better than before!

**UPDATE**

OK, after sending my dealer a very 'to the point' letter and email, my car was taken in 2 weeks ago for another diagnosis. After removing and stripping the gearbox Subaru UK have given the dealer the go ahead to fit a brand new gearbox.

Only downside is that there are none in the country and I have to wait until 8th March.

Upside, is that Subaru Assistance are footing the bill of the hire car

Fingers crossed, this saga will come to closure very soon.

**update**

I now have a brand new 05 6 speeder fitted, and the rattle has gone

Dealer took my car in and took apart the gearbox buit couldn't find the fault. Subaru then gave the go ahead for a new gearbox but they didn't have any.

So, 2 months later the part finally arrives and is fitted. Subaru paid for a hire car for the whole period.

I am now very very happy, that bloody rattle has now gone, plus I have a brand new gearbox - RESULT
