Default Just a gimmick??? Or a good piece of kit

Iv'e had my 03 sti for a year now and mostly use it on the twisty country roads near to where i live.
During that time i've filled up the water intercooler spray tank twice!!!!!
Its not that im worried about crashing as im going round a bend with one hand on the steering wheel and the other fishing about for the spray button. I just dont think it makes that much difference when i do press it.
The Evo also has a intercooler spray fitted but that has an automatic setting allowing you to switch it on and forget about it.
Im more worried about mould in the water tank than actually running out of water!

So come who uses the spray on there car and is it any good? Or is it just a Gimmick.

I've got to fill mine up nearly every time it take the car out!

Its a sti V5 type r though so it has the option to set it to automatically trigger. It goes through so much I've taken to driving around with a spare bottle in the boot.

Don't know how effective it is though.

Cheers for that.
Maybe i need to stick the button in with a piece of chewy !
Or get it upgraded to an automatic spray module, I know Autospeed do a upgrade for
the intercooler, but is it worth it ???

What do you think then Gimmick Or not??

DEFINITELY not a gimmick. Best thing to do is fit a thermocouple and a trigger module to the side of the intercooler and turn on the spray when it's getting hot.

Definitely not - especially after you've been stuck in traffic.

eLabtronics / Autospeed magazine in Australia do a good box of electrics, DIY build or ready build. Looks at air temp, inlet charge temp, AND injector duty cycle to see when you need a spray of water on the old TMIC.

Fully adjustable too IIRC.

Using the intercooler spray?

Use it whenever you are "pressing on".

Especially when heat would have soaked into the intercooler, maybe air filter and pipes, and you want to go off on a run.

So basically, when ever the under bonnet bits involved with getting air into the engine are getting hot.

Prevents to some extent det, increases charge density and hence power a bit ( well maintains what it SHOULD be ! ) etc.

LOL

People FILL the bottle with ice cubes/water, others spray the top mount with a CO2 fire extinguisher to cool it ready for the air charge, but that IS mainly for competition / track days / drag days / scooby shoot out etc.

Others squirt Nitrous on the IC ... sure I could think of a better way to use it!

It's only there because the rally cars want to use one and homologation rules say you can only fit one to the rally car if the road car has one.

Sadly once it's fitted the method of operating it on the rally cars is free. So they get all signing all dancing ECU controlled water inject if delta T across the turbo exceeds X and when boost is higher than Y and throttle position more than Z and stuff like that. The road cars get a poxy button.....

Best performance use for the button is to keep pressing it until the tank is empty. The weight saving of not lugging around 2 gallons of water will more than make up for the temperature benefit of spraying it when you have time to. After all when you have time to grovel around by your left knee for the right button is just when you don't need to.....

So, yes a gimmick on the road car imho.

Not a bad price either at less than 300 Aussie $ delivered. Has anyone fitted one of these - how easy is it?
