Remove & install evaporator in a MY00 impreza?
Hi everyone!
Im brand new here, living in sweden.
I have a impreza GT, with no AC.
I have bought a system, so I can mount it in my car.
The question is, how do you remove the evaporator in the car?
I know it´s placed in the passenger side of the car, in the heat exchanger under the glovbox.
How do i get it out?
Has anyone done this, and have some pictures or some kind of instruction how to refitt an whole AC system?
Thanx.

oops, forgot to take pics of my install, did it a couple of days ago
Basically, remove the glovebox, and then there are 3 bolts holding the heater matrix in place, remove these three bolts, undo the connector uderneath the blower, then remove the matrix, fit new one put 3 bolts back in, job done
Took me about 20 minutes to do mine

Ok, that sounds easy.
The guy I bought the "kit" from, have not taken out the evaporator.
So I have to do it.
I think I try to remove the glovebox on my own car first, so I can see how the things are placed.
Thanx!

the glovebox is quite easy, there are about 5 or six screws, two of them are underneath (you need the glovebox closed for these, then there is one in the middle inside, then a couple more either side
There is also a plastic screw type plug in the side of the glovebox, you will need to remove this also.
Do you have the full heater matrix with the evaporator, or do you just have the evaporator part
If so, once you have removed the matrix, you will then need to seperate the blower unit, from the empty (where the evaporator bit goes) unit, and then swap it with the evaporator unit
Im sure I read something about having to reseal the evaporator tho (as mine was a complete uit with blower, I just did a direct swap)
The 3 bolts holding the heater matrix are one at the bottom near the centre console (on the bulkhead) another at the top, and the other is right in the corner near the door, and is a bit of a pig, as the steel bar is across and in the way, along with some airbag wires (the yellow ones)
To remove that bolt, I got a long extension bar, and managed to get it into the gap, with a little bit of fiddling about
Oh, you will also need deep sockets to remove the 3 bolts

I have not an evaporator in my car now.
In fact, I dont have AC att all.
I´m going to built in an whole "kit" from an MY99.
So I can change the whole thing with the other car?
Have I understand correct, the heat exchanger is divisible?
I can take out just the plastic part of the heat exchanger with the evaporator in it?
To bad you did´t take any pictures!

Yes, that is essentially what I have done, all the bolts holes are there
It is much easier to do a direct swap with the complete heater unit (evaporator and blower) than it is to mess about splitting up the components
I havent had mine re-gassed yet, but that will be happening this week

Sorry for beeing a bit reetarded here, but this is not my language!
The blower and the evaporator is in one smaller part.
And the heat exchanger are another bigger part.
The blower and evaporator part can be taken loose from the heat exchanger part, right so far?

heh no problems
give me a few minutes, and I will put up a pic of the unit I took out of my car,
The unit I put in my car is identical in size shape etc, the only exception being that it had the evaporator unit in it

Sorry got a bit tied up last night, and forgot all about it
Anyway here are the pics of my heater matrix I removed, the side shot (left hand side) is where the evaporator sits, I did a straight swap for a complete unit, with evaporator already in

Perfect!
I took down the glove compartment this afternoon.
So I´m a bit "clearer" now.
I saw where the matrix was divisible, there the white heat exchanger meets with the black evap matrix.
Thanx for all help and the pictures!
I allso looked around under the hood, and all the cables that should be conected to the compressor, the fan & the pressure sensors are allready there!
Then I allso discovered that it was just an bit of plastic, that covered the hole for the AC on/off button in the car.
The AC text is there to!
So I dont need to do some wiring either.
Just put in the reley´s and cabels, and I´m set!

what you should have are the following components
1. Compressor (big heavy pump thing, that sits next to the alternator, along with pulley and tensioner)
2. Compressor Bracket (you need to remove the alternator to fit this
3. Exchanger /Drier , this sits on the passenger side inner wing against the strut (looks like a silver cannister)
4. Condensor, sits in front of the radiator
5. Heater Matrix as pictured above
6. 2 small diamter pieces of pipework (one long one short, short one goes from drier to matrix, long one goes from drier to condensor)
7. 2 large diameter pieces of pipework (the longer one goes from the compressoor to the matrix, the shorter one from the compressor to the condenser)
8. Air Con Belt
9. All necessary bolts, washers, rubber grommits etc
10. the dashboard switch
11. 4 Relays that go in the main fusebox (might only be 3)
12. 2nd Fan to go on the rad
once fitted take it along to your local air con specialist, and they will re-gas it for you, takes about an hour, as they have to vacuum the system first, then fill with gas and oil, then add the dye
Gas is R134a and is approx 0.55-0.65kg quantity, Compressor Oil (should say on the compressor) volume is 150cm3
Hope this all helps
