Question Rear Bumper - Help!

I need to remove/adjust rear bumber (STiV) but can't seem to get it to budge - loosened the big bolts on the under chassis box-frames, but no joy?!

Cheers

I needed to undo four large bolts into chassis. Also was attached to wheel arches on both sides and don't forget the connectors for the reg plate light if its coming right off.

I think there may also be a few screws under the rear lights to undo.

What? Removing those bolts won't help you, they hold the entire bumper bar and crush structure into the back of the chassis. There is no way to adjust the alignment of the bumper via these.

To get the bumper off, as the others have said, remove the pop clips inside the back of the rear wheelarches, underneath at each side and underneath in the middle (behind the registration plate).

You're then going to have to remove both rear lights and pop-up the plastic clips holding the bumper onto the mounting bar. There are seven/nine (forget which) of them all the way along from under the lights to under the bootlid.

Once they're all out, the bumper should pull off.

Thanks all, Greasemonkey - I will give it a go, just need to bring O/S "into line". BTW, the bumper had encounter with reversing old lady's car (widower, OAP, etc) - just couldn't bring myself to make a "claim", as damage isn't noticeable, just needs "alignment".

Don't want to fill you with dread unnecessarily, but if it didn't return to the way it's supposed to be after the collision, chances are the bumper bar (and/or its supports) have been moved, and getting that back exactly how it's supposed to be won't be an easy job.

Easiest option in that case may be to elongate the holes in the bumper, allowing it to realign itself with the body.

Thumbs up

The bumper iron is more than likely bent! it's made from a right flimsy piece of metal and you should be able to straighten it once you get it off or purchase a new one they can't be expensive!!.

Right, rear one piece of p*ss to remove, although you may have to purchase some new push clips afterwards if their brittle!

Look underneath in the middle and remove the push clip which you can see first, then if I remember correctly there are two clips underneath at each side which you remove next, then get a socket and remove the three bolts underneath on each side which secure the iron to the chassis rails, on the near side two of them also hold the exhaust hanger bracket to the chassis, this should now loosen the whole bumper assembly, once loose you then need to remove the two clips (one each side) that hold the sides of the bumper to the rear quarters, look just inside the wheel arch and you will see them, now the only other thing holding it on are the wires to the number plate lights, either take the boot to bits to get to the other side and unplug them and pull them through or simply cut them between the bumper and the valance (easiest option) and rejoin them later with connectors. Once off you can remove all the other clips that you'll see and separate the bumper from the iron. Doing it this way means that you don't have to remove the rear lights as they don't come out easily due to being stuck in with non setting mastic....

Have Fun

Hi Folks,

Just a quick update. Removed the 3 bolts from O/S chassis and Bumper immediately went back to original position. Played around with the Bumper "iron" (90 deg box/tube construction) and it appeared the whole Bumber would come out (once N/S bolts removed) - plus number plate lights etc. Didn't have to remove the middle clips, and certainly don't think the clips under the rear lights area could be easily popped out - unless I miss read RB5's message. Stopped there, as Grind Prix and then Footie was coming on!!

Will complete this weekend. Thanks again for everyones inputs.

Cheers

Once you have it loose like you've said, there is definately two plastic clips to remove each side which hold the triangular sides of the bumper up and two the rear quarters,
can't be sure about the two clips I mentioned underneath might have been on the front one, but definately one in the middle underneath although this one may be for separating the plastic overbumper from the iron along with the ones you saw under the lights.

Hi RB5

I will attempt this weekend. I also see a metal bar in the middle (just behind the number plate complex - suspect unique to STi's), but in anycase I will go a bit at a time!

Cheers
