When driving normally, no problems, but if i give it a big bit of right foot, and then back off hard (not braking), the CEL comes on ..............the cars drives fine other than that....

car is 93wrx, with a 94 RA engine on std ecu

any ideas what sensors may trigger this??

Haven't you tried ECU read mode to find out what the code was...?
