Question Timing belt breaks/vaves bend?

If a timing belt breaks,is there a good chance that the valves would bend or would the pistons clear an open valve?

If a car has a front end colision and the cam wheel breaks, would the engine be useless unless opened to inspect damage?

Is there a chance that the camshaft could have been damaged by a force great enough to shatter the camshaft pulley.

BTW it is a MY99 turbo awd engine and the damage is on the left exhaust pulley?

Has anyone had experience with a similar situation?
I have my opinion, but more info would be handy.

Just been supplied an engine that was supposedly tested but the cam wheel is missing and there are signs that its happened in the accident.

It seems the breaker is trying to bulls41t me by telling me that a theif broke the timing belt cover and nicked the pulley whilst the engine was waiting to go out.He has told me before buying that it has been heard running.

Not going to mention who they are yet.

Any thoughts or info would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't touch it unless it's complete with belt tensioner etc....
That way, at least you can check it turns over by hand with a spanner/ratchet. - and you can ascertain if the timing is correct

Buyer beware!

I have first hand experience of this.. Both left pulleys smashed off! -The chassis leg knocks em off! Did a compression check and all appeared fine. fitted the new pulleys, belts and tensioners etc -timed up correctly, started first time absolutely sweet as a nut.

I can't say this is always the case but I know of two that have been fine in this situ and don't know of any that have damage?

Good luck..

Cool

I would tend to lean on the side of caution, as you dont know what road/engine speed the collision occurred do you? especially if not your own car, then, obviously its different and you know these factors.
It could of been a slow speed, or even stationary impact, or the reverse, and its hit a barrier or something at motorway speeds, which then, the engine components would still be rotating and a few rpm!

The only way is to turn the engine over and see how it feels.
You could be lucky, on the other hand...............?

Thanks a lot for the replies.

Called them first thing in the morning and told them.
They agreed to take it back and refund me,but they did try to convince me
that it would have been ok.

Anyway its gone back now.

Interesting to hear its possible that it could be ok,but Im not going to find out.

was more annoyed by the bull I got about it being stolen from their yard.
The main camshaft bolt had been undone but the 10mm bolts had been smashed off, yeah right.
