Unhappy Please help ....

I have an STi 5 Type RA with DCCD, I thought I'd have a go at doing donuts in a car park tonight, only to be left with a problem.

When I go round left hand turns I've got a rubbing noise coming from the right hand wheel. I'm pretty certain it's suspension related (with the wheel rubbing on the arch), because;
  • The suspension on the right hand side is lower than that on the left, though i cant be totally sure it hasn't always been like it. I can get my hand in between the wheel and wheel arch on the left, but not the right.
  • I can also do it by going along a straight road turn slightly right then turning hard left (to load up the right rear suspension).
I've only done one donut, which was anticlockwise (turning left).

Please can anyone help with any suggestions as to what to look for, I'm not totally sure what I'm looking at when it comes to suspension.

No one?

I just wanted to add that the problem has been created after doing the donuts, not that it was present during.

I'm gonna take the morning off work, jack her up and whip the wheel off, see if I've bust anything.

Just after some suggestions as to what particulalry to look for?

I dunno, what ya like...?! What was the condition of the surface like? What setting did you have the DCCD on...?

I suppose you could always do a clockwise donut to see if it creates the same problem on the opposite side of the suspension, balancing the problem out...!

Normal tarmac, flat and slightly damp.

What setting did you have the DCCD on...?
Fully open

This was my thought too

Ok, update on the prob.

I've taken the wheel off and can see nothin broken and nothing moves. The spring however doesn't look quite right at the top.

This is the side that has 'dropped';

This is from the other side;

Both pics were taken with the car off the jack.

If you notice at the top the top ring of the spring and the rubber it's sitting in don't look quite right.

I also notice that if I compress that side of the car from inside the boot then I get a clunk and then again when it decompresses.

All suggestions gratefully received?

Looks as if the top mount may have been twisted round a little. Maybe the nut on the top of the damper was loose before you started donuting? It looks more or less normal to me in the photos.

Unfortunately it's a case of taking the rear seats out to check this, but probably worth it to be sure. I have a set of spring compressors if you need them.

I think you may be onto something here Dave, it's got different size holes in it, on the left side (ok side) the big whol pretty much points towards the centre of the hub, on the right side it's at more of an angle.

It isn't different by much, no more than about 30 degrees but it's definately different. Is this likely to be causing my problem?

When I say the 2 pictures look different, look here;

On this side you can see the end of the spring and it seems to be digging into the rubber at the top. If you look at the other side you cant see the end of the spring at all and you can only just feel it. The rubber at the top also is all uniform, it almost looks like another coil of the spring.

Can't really see enough from these pics to tell if everything's within normal parameters on both sides or not.

Have you tried loosening the mounting screws and dropping the top mount out of the turret?

Once it's free you should be able to turn the top mount around, both checking whether the bearing's still free and noiseless, and making sure the spring's seated fully.

I'm gonna try this tonight.

Bearing? Is there one up there then and what does it do?

TBH, from what I can see it does look to me like the spring has jumped out, do you think that this is likely?
