Best advise.............."DONT".

Unless you get the mixture exactly right, you are leading yourself for major problems. can you afford the engine rebuild's ??

Two types out there, the wrong type will eat through your fuel lines.......best left to racers etc

Lab grade is not needed. Just make sure what you are buying is 100% toulene. I have used many, many, many gallons of toulene in MY02 WRX. Keep the %'s down to ~20%. I all ways premix 50/50 the toulene with the fuel being used before adding it to the tank. Great stuff it is very effective at raising the octane of the fuel used.
You should look in to methanol too. It is much cheaper than toulene and easier to find.

Its a lot of hassle

Best idea is really to stick with NF Booster and Optimax....... Do you really want to be carting this stuff around with you, as and when you fill up away from home for instance....Certainly wouldnt want to be carrying around any Tolulene anyway........20% would mean you'd need a 10liter jerry can........ I guess you take your own risks if you have the stuff in the boot and are involved in a bad accident...this stuff is very, very highly flammable (as is race fuel)

Dont forget that you'll need a fuel transfer pump for the Methanol and/or Tolulene......... (to get it out of say a 205litre drum (i.e. whats the point in getting it in small does at higher prices?)

Methanol is known to react with fuel lines (dont know about the paint stripping Tolulene stuff)

Methanol is an alternative to Octane Booster
Tolulene is an alterntive to cheaper racing fuel

Does anyone know the oxygen content % of Tolulene?

If you have the money and want to do this properly then why not try some race fuel?

You do not need a fuel transfer pump.
It comes in 25 litre steel drums (Toluene) or plastic drums, (Methanol) from Jenny Chem with next day delivery via normal carrier. £30 odd per 25l.
Do not know the oxy contents but Methanol has a higher oxy content than Toluene. Jenny Chem can supply the tech info.
They will both lift the octane of pump petrol but I have no idea why Toluene should be something to do with racing fuel. Typically 10 litres of Toluene premixed to a tank of Optimax will increase the octane rating to just under 101 RON.

As Fangoria rightly points out it is a lot of faffing about carrying 10 litres of methanol or toluene or a mixture of both everytime you want to fill up.
If you mess about with it and make a mistake it could cost you an engine unless you know what you are doing.

Toluene is Methyl Benzene ( CH3-C6H6 ) NO oxygen in it!

Methanol is CH3OH, a primary alcohol ( and toxic! )

Above, C = carbon, H = hydrogen, O = oxygen.

I thank you

I don't think the oxygen in methanol is available to be burnt, but Methanol in itself has a much richer (in terms of AFR) stoich point, around 6:1. So running 10% methanol will lean out the fuel mixture (ie raise lambda value even if AFR remains constant).

I have tried methanol, ethanol, acetone, NF octane boost, leaded race fuel, unleaded race fuel and even standard paint thinners in various ratios and combinations. My advice is go with NF or Millers octane booster, and if you're really keen for drag days or similar, try a 5-10% methanol mix (you can use it with octane booster too).

I have used Toulene to great effect on my previous turbo car. I used to add around 2litres to a tank full of super u/l

I think you will find that premium cellulose paint thinners is just toulene, which is around £4.5 for 5l.

Just be carefull with it, its not good to get it on your hands !
