TD05/06-20G in MY96 ?
Hello !
I'm french and it's my first intervention in this forum, so i hope you'll excuse me if you don't understand easily what i say !...
i've a impreza GT my96 and i would like to fit a TD05/06-20G turbo in my car....are there somebody already do it ? do you have dyno about that ?
is possible to fit in even with the 90° inlet elbow of TD05 ?
my car have 3"exhaust full decat with exhaust manifold, admission modified, ecu remapped and boost controler...
i've test a STI7 with this turbo and it's really better than the vf35, so i think there's possibility to have more torque lower in rpm compared TD05...

I had a TD05/06 in my 95 mate and the car was absolutely flying!
Few things you can do while fitting.
1 - Convert to front entry which most people do - this can be done with manifold spacers (which im not 100% sure about but sure some people have done it this way), or converting to the phase 1.5 inlet and then the turbo fits nicely
2 - Keep the 90 degree elbow. I believe Johnny gav did this - kept the 90 degree elbow by using some samco and still got some good figures from his.
If you look in projects, my thread is up there showing the fitting of the turbo with other bits

what's your boost pressure with the TD05/06 ?
actually, with td05, i've 19.6psi at 4000rpm, 17.4psi at 6000 and 16.7psi at the redline

With hindsight I would not go to the bother of changing to front entry if fitting this turbo. Using std internals, Jonny Gav has just made 419bhp and 370lb-ft of torque on this turbo whilst retaining a 90 degree inlet fed by a larger bore Samco hose. 1 bar at 3000 rpm, 1.45 bar at 3500 rpm tailing to 1.3 bar at 7000 rpm

Rah andy, that is very good power!
370 torque and still has standard wrx gearbox? What a lucky bugger - most people have buggered theirs under 350 torque!
Should see some interesting 1/4 mile out of that. High 11s no problem

The TD05/06-20G is a front entry turbo as standard as I supply it. It is converted to fit the MY93-96 by fitting a 90 degree samco inlet hose. For MY97 onwards this hose is not required.
The std MY96 injectors will struggle to keep this turbo fed at anything over 1.1 bar at full rpm, you really need 550's to take full advantage.

The TD05/06-20G is a front entry turbo as standard as I supply it. It is converted to fit the MY93-96 by fitting a 90 degree samco inlet hose. For MY97 onwards this hose is not required.

Yes I can supply the hose with the turbo. The TD05 can run higher boost with std injectors as it is pumping less air due to running lower efficiency that the 20G.

i don't search specially more power at hight rpm (if it's the cas, i'll be happy so !!!) but only more earlier torque ...

Hi Andy,
RicouGT is a good friend of mine. We spent our week-end on race track with some other Friends. I beleive the pain in his back reminds him the impressive boost the TD05/06 can provide ;-) It seems he was not the only one...one even became sick into the car while on the track
The 3" Helix downpipe is now fitted. I'll post new dynos when performed.

AndyF - dropped you a couple of emails and phone message. Can you mail me re supply for FE modded TDo5 (price and address for cheque etc)
And what is the advantage of the 20G TD05/06 rather than the TD05 if I'm only looking for about 320 max (want to keep gearbox as long as poss.)

Trance - The TD05 is fitted to 'most' 93-96 cars. This turbo originally has a tight 90 degree bend cast into the intake to the compressor. Removing this bend and fitting a "front entry" conversion allows this turbo to be used on 97 onwards cars. It is widely regarded as the toughest, most reliable subaru turbo capable of 350+ bhp with supporting mods.
This same turbo can be converted to the TD05/06-20G. This has a larger compressor wheel (20G) and larger compressor housing (normally found on a TD06) This allows outputs of up to 440 bhp whilst retaining the response/spool up of the standard TD05 turbo.
The 20G compressor housing is "front entry" as supplied. To fit this turbo to the 93-96 cars a 90 degree Samco hose can be fitted to allow the original intake system to be used. the increased bore of the samco inlet pipe allows excellent power (419 bhp proven) even although a 90 degree inlet is retained.

Just done my gear box in (3rd gear) with 322 torque, and only 376 bhp , with a TDO5 ??? Alan.
A TD05 at 1.4/1.5 bar is well capable of killing a std gearbox

I have 440 injectors 3" Scooby mania exhaust and Roger Clarke Downpipe and K&N Panel filter. Walbro Fuel pump, FSE Fuel Reg.

Alan, I estimate your cars torque to be approx 340lb-ft, this is what makes it feel quick in the midrange, unfortunately it is also torque that stresses the gearbox, there is no easy option I'm afraid, on a UK box I'd suggest trying to limit the use of full throttle in 3rd as this is the common failure.
SubtypeR - the typeR box seems to be a bit better than the UK box, it doesn't suffer the same 3rd gear weakness as far as I'm aware.
