where am i best to strap the engine lift onto? usually engines have hoops for such a job, but there aint on the flat four. just put it onto the inlet manifold? how am i also best to get to take gearbox from the block itself?

There should be 2 holes. One is near the alternator/air con i think and the other one is closer to the turbo.

Gearbox should sit on a jack while you lift the gearbox out

i also have old pop's who is a mechanic by trade and a whole host of other....not worked on scoobs, but it's still a car with an engine.

I unnderstand where your coming from,but be awrned the layout in this car does make it a little different from other cars with inline engines (obviously).

The lifting points are as Money describes.If the car has AC then its between the compressor and alternator.The one at the back next to the turbo is on the same bracket that the intrcooler bolts to.

The gearbox will not come off unless the bolts ataching the pressure plate to the fly wheel are undone first(similar to taking off a torque convertor on an auto).
Take off the access plate directly underneath the flywheel to get at these(you need a second person to turn/hold the engine from the crank shaft pulley bolt).These bolts are also visable throught the starter motor hole in the bell housing.

Glenburgie Subaru in Foress are always ultra-helpful with me (and my breakages) am sure u could call on them for advice, may be pretty close to you as well if you wanted to get a local engine..or bits to help the re-build

Are you doing a overhaul or straight swap ?

halo. i'm basically doing a straight swop, maybe my wording confused some folks, but i'm sure you know what i mean. no offense to yourself about glenburgie, but when i phoned to enquire about sti engines(if they had them) i was told they only had an sti3 engine and it was infact exactly the same engine and would suit what i was planning on doing not a problem....in other words my 99 engine is the same as a, say 96 engine????? ok, i'm not a engine desginer, but i'm also not stupid enough to fall for that one....or am i totally wrong?

The sti 3 engine is a phase 1 and the rb5 has a phase 2.
Main difference on complete engine is the heads are different.
Short block from any scooby is the same in principle( short meaning no heads).
Are you keeping the orignal manifold on?there is supposed to be a few minor differences between the sti5/6 and uk(assuming the s/h engine has an inlet manifold).Check carefully it might just be vacum pipes and sensors.

Seems odd mate I suppose technically it is a straight swap - but like you say isnt really what ur looking for..sorry that one didnt work out.

Sounds like you have it in hand, did u get a good price for a new engine ?What the time frame for back on road
